We've had a lot of threads around here about 'splitting' the Norris. Looks like instead of adding an offensive trophy, they added a defensive trophy:

Wait, that's an official award now? Don't like it IMO. Voters are just going to be even more inclined to vote for offense for the Norris now. An all-around D-man like Hedman for example is probably less likely to win now.
For what it's worth, the same people who voted on this award also voted Hedman for Norris.
I think it would have been better to add an offense oriented defenseman trophy and scale up the value of defense with regards to the Norris
Agreed, the Norris should put an emphasis on defense first. Then the new one should be offensive defensemen, basically an opposite Selke.
there are too many trophies as it is
if I was god of the universe I'd only have the Ross, Hart, Smythe, Vezina, Norris, and Calder, and maybe the Bing since it's super-old and classy
the rest could vanish overnight and nothing of value would be lost
Sad.This is the first time i've ever heard the name Rod Langway. Which is a bit ironic, because I doubt any player similar to Langway will ever win this award.
Sorry I'm not 40 years old to know the name.
The problem is look at the finalists they are the same as the Norris just reshuffled.Personally, I like it. The Norris is already skewed towards offensive production. A trophy that recognizes defensive play by a D is something that I welcome.
Klingberg is in the Norris, Chara in the Langway. The problem is look at the finalists they are the same as the Norris just reshuffled.
