Schmiemann Shines in Preseason Debut - Lehigh Valley Phantoms

Wilkes-Barre, PA – Tryout defenseman Quinn Schmiemann had a goal and a fight for the Lehigh Valley Phantoms in a 2-1 loss at the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Wednesday night in the preseason opener for both teams. The game also marked the debut of new head coach Ian Lapperiere at the Phantoms’ bench.

The Phantoms employed 11 tryout contract players in the lineup including nine hopefuls on ECHL contracts with Reading or Maine as well as two players who have not signed contracts for the upcoming season. Schmiemann is one of those who has yet to sign. But his performance on Wednesday was certainly an attention grabber. The 6’2″ defenseman from the Kamloops Blazers of the WHL snapped home a power-play drive from the left point in the second period to get the Phantoms on the board. He had dropped the gloves in the first period with 6’4″ tall Jake Flegel of the Penguins.

Brennan Saulnier also dropped the gloves as he got involved with Shaw Boomhower in the second period.

Sad times when the phantoms are gonna be more fun to watch than the flyers.

What year is it? Somehow I keep reading that line year after year and guess what: the Phantoms still suck :naughty:
This org has struggled to build a winning culture both in the NHL and AHL. Yes, there are some fun prospects on the LHV roster but this squad is mediocre at best.

I didn't say the Phantoms were going to be good. I said they would be more fun.

Having Frost- Foerster - Tuomaala- Willman - York - Zamula -Hogberg -Sandstrom - Ersson -Ustimenko

At least gives us something to root for.

It'll be interesting to watch Willman v Frost.
Frost the 22 year old hyped prospect with speed and skill.
Willman the 26 year old nonprospect who scored at the same ES rate as Frost in the AHL.
In preseason, I though Willman showed as much as Frost.

Willman is older, but had an convoluted path to the AHL, had been drafted by Buffalo in the 5th rd in 2014, was coming on when he tore his ACL in his senior year, then spend a year at BU as a graduate transfer. Unsigned, he went to the ECHL and worked his way up to the Phantoms.

You'll get a healthy dose of Nick Seeler, Gerald Mayhew, Garrett Wilson (if he doesn't make the Flyers lmao), and Cal O'Reilly - and you'll like it.

Willman is a wing

He's played center as well. Like in preseason.
You new around here? Also you have more faith in Lappy then me.

I have more faith in Lappy than Gordon.
Lappy may not be a great game coach, but I think he'll communicate and support the prospects better than Gordon.
And he'll run the same scheme as the big club, does anyone know what scheme Gordon was running?

The other thing Lappy has going for him is he IS a Flyer and, as such, will always be gainfully employed. In theory, he does not have to worry about winning as much and can focus on developing the prospects. This plus it looks like a lot of the AHL slugs will actually be playing for the Flyers (JK, somewhat)

One of the things lapi could do really well was pick his spots. I have a lot of confidence in his feel for the game and putting the right guys out to change the tempo. Knowing how long to ride a got hand and what matchups to press. He's a rookie coach but it's not as if he's new to this level

Interesting guy to watch, Avon, how does a guy with those wheels and that size go undrafted?
6'0 174, just turned 18 in July so he has plenty of time to fill out that frame.
Struggled in the OHL at 16, didn't play at 17.
You'd think someone would have used a 6th or 7th rd pick on him.

Tuomaala is undersized, but is he any more undersized than 19 year old TK in the NHL?

TK 5'10 175
tuomaala 5'10 176
