There are not a lot of surprises. Most predictions I read got almost all of them right.

Good for Villeneuve and Quebecois filmmaking! Still expecting La La Land to dominate wins.

I think the one movie that got no noms that will generate some discussion is Birth of a Nation by Nate Parker--Hype started back in Feb for the movie..but once the history of Parker and some nasty allegations came about--the Hype died

14 nominations for La La Land. The backlash is going to be real.

Happy to see Viggo pick up a nom - he won't win but it's nice to see him recognized.

Yeah, people will definitely compare him with Mel Gibson.

I find Birth of a Nation to be average, so I have no problem with the perceived snub.

I can't really fault it for getting nominated in many of the technical awards. I just that I feel those awards are already decided, and not because La La Land is the best, but because "how can you not vote for La La Land?", almost seems to be a theme.

I'm also happy to see Viggo get nominated as I wrote in the other thread. He deserves the recognition.

Maybe...but it was a good movie, so I'm not too bothered by it, if it does end up piling up wins.

Yeah, I want to check out Captain Fantastic now. Anyone who saw it raves about it.

While I did not like La La Land too much, I am not surprised by all the nominations. It has major buzz right now.

Right now, it looks like many of the races are already decided, and La La Land will be the big winner. I will not be surprised if it wins eight or more.

The only intrigue might be in Best Supporting Actress category, where it looks to be a truly open race.

Huppert nominated for best actress. I'm happy.

Not much to complain about, really, but Adams seemed a more deserving nominee than yet another knee-jerk nomination for Streep.

Huppert deserves it.

I already know La La Land is going to clean up... Its basically a film catered to the Oscars.

Mahershala Ali better win supporting actor. Dude stole the show every time he was on the screen in Moonlight even if it was just for a minimum amount of time. But I wouldn't be shocked at all if Moonlight gets shafted.

Is it me or are the movies nominated becoming less and less "mainstream"? Or maybe their isn't a "mainstream" anymore with the way films are delivered. I've only seen Hell or High Water currently. I can't remember a year when I hadn't seen at least 3 of the best picture noms. Although in my defense, I just had a baby girl a month ago, so maybe that plays a part in it.
