The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed forward Tom Sestito to a professional tryout contract, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Jim Rutherford.

Sestito, 27, has played parts of seven NHL seasons with Columbus, Philadelphia and Vancouver, producing 18 points (10G-8A) and 432 penalty minutes in 137 career regular-season games.

At 6-foot-5, 228 pounds, Sestito will be the largest player attending Pittsburgh’s training camp. His best NHL season came with Vancouver in 2013-14 when he posted career highs in games (77), goals (5), assists (4), points (9) and penalty minutes (213). His 213 penalty minutes led the NHL and his 121 hits ranked third on the Canucks.

A native of Rome, New York, Sestito has 256 career AHL regular-season contests on his resume during stints with Syracuse, Springfield, Adirondack and Utica. Sestito has compiled 113 points (48G-65A) and 887 penalty minutes in AHL action.

The lefthanded-shooting Sestito broke into the NHL with the Columbus Blue Jackets in 2008 after being selected by the team in the third round (85th overall) of the 2006 NHL Draft.

Prior to joining the Blue Jackets, Sestito skated for the Plymouth Whalers of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) from 2004-07. He helped the club capture the ‘07 OHL playoff title and a berth in the Memorial Cup.

Sestito’s older brother, Tim, has logged NHL action in parts of seven seasons with Edm

I don't want enforcers on my team. No offense to Tom or any of the other tough guys but that day and age is over and it isn't worth using an active spot on.

Only good part (without the horrendous PIM) is :

His best NHL season came with Vancouver in 2013-14 when he posted career highs in games (77), goals (5), assists (4), points (9) and penalty minutes (213). His 213 penalty minutes led the NHL and his 121 hits ranked third on the Canucks.

He ...seems to be improving production wise.

We had another PIMS leader last year, how'd that work out for us?

I could maybe be okay with this if he gets sent down when Fehr comes off IR. I doubt he makes the team out of camp though

Always struck me as a big mouth idiot. But he's big and physical, and could be useful as a call-up.

FINALLY!

Great move here, JR. Now please sign him and stash him in the AHL in case teams start roughhousing us in-season.

With the amount of firepower we currently have, we could actually be vulnerable this season.

Last season, nobody really cared because our scoring went way down.

I see the need to have an enforcer around, even if he's stashed in the AHL.

Well, I'm sure this is a great day for some people and WBS will end up with him if he's even signed to a contract by us. So what ever as long as he doesn't manage to injure one of our actual hockey players in the preseason.

At the very least he'll be useful in pre-season games, to keep opponents busy who want to prove something stupid. Also the Baby Pens are still without an enforcer.
