Say your team is leading by 1 goal with 2 minutes left in the game and you have a choice of getting a penalty shot or a man-advantage penalty...

What would you rather get?

Leading by one? The PP. You have (let's say) a 1/3 chance to score on a PS versus 1/5 on a PP, but a PS kills no time off the clock while the PP does. You don't need to score on that final PP to be effective.

Trailing by one... I'd need to see the numbers of success rate 6 on 4 factoring in shorties, but depending on who is taking the PS, I think I'd rather have that (especially since you still have the 2 minutes to score if you fail).

Wait, so my team is UP by one point and I have a choice of taking a penalty shot or getting a power play? Or my team is DOWN by one point and I get that choice? Or I'm up but the other team is getting the opportunity?

Broadly speaking, penalty shots have a better chance of succeeding than PPs so I'll make my decision based on that.

PP in the scenario OP laid out. Absolutely unless the team gives up short-handed goals left and right. If the other team pulls their goalie, you have an empty net at ES.

I fully support letting the coach opt for a PP when a PS is awarded.

I take the PP in this scenario. The interesting question is when do you draw the line? Do you still take the PP with 3 minutes left? 4 minutes? etc.

For STL I want nothing to do with anything that is not ES. Give me Penalty Shots or give us death.

Seriously though our special teams are absolute ass.

A good place
I always thought that if a team doesn’t score on a penalty shot, they should get a power play. Not sure why they don’t do that.

CBJ would decline the PP and take the shot. That would be one more shot than they get on most PP's this season. Sad but true.

I don't really understand the OPs question. Is my team or the other team taking the penalty?

Well, I actually want the penalty in both cases if my team is up by 1.

Your team is up 1 with 2 minutes to go in the game. You have the option to take a penalty shot or a power play. Do you take the penalty shot to try and go up 2 goals, or take the power play to kill off the final 2 minutes of the game with the lead?

If you're up a goal, you want to burn clock, so take the power play.
If you're down a goal, a penalty shot has a higher chance of scoring than a power play, so take the penalty shot.

Yep, original question is if our team is up but question is also debatable if team is trailing by 1 goal.

Consensus if team is leading by 1: take penalty to kill the clock

The choice when you are down 1 is actually just simple math.

Average PP conversion rate is less than 20%. Average penalty shot conversion is over 30.

For this to be a question your team has to have the best Power Play unit of all time, basically.

Depends who would be taking the shot. I am sure there is probably 2-3 guys per team that the fans would like to take the shot and the other 15 they want the PP
