The fellow who cowrote the Steam song died last week. His obit mentions the tune became popular after a Chicago badeball organist began playing it at White Sox games in 1977.

Seem to remember hearing it at The Forum well before then. Am I mistaken?

I believe legend has it that it was first used by the University of Minnesotas' Gophers BB Team, followed by the White Sox (organ) & Hartford Whalers (who played it after every win).
