Two observations: he was a co-captain on Providence, which speaks to some maturity and leadership, plus, though somewhat undersized, he has a pretty thick neck and looks solid from the photos I've seen.

Rhode Island and New England are big hockey area's - I wouldn't say they are non-traditional. That is really for Texas, Florida, etc....
