I get where this is coming from: Riikola had a great camp for the Pens and everyone thinks he has now made a Pens D man expendable. Maatta is a legitimate trade candidate if Riikola turns out to be the real deal.

But Maatta for Panarin makes no sense for anyone. First off Panarin, even a 1 year rental of Panarin, is worth more than Maatta right now. Secondly, the Pens in no way shape or form would have the cap space to retain Panarin after this season and would need an additional cap dump just to make his current salary work.

You're going to see a lot of Maatta for __(Insert top 6 LW Here)__ this season.

Yeah, I'm gonna say if the Jackets offered Panarin for Maatta you just take it, thank your lucky stars that Jarmo had a momentary stroke - and figure the rest out later. Seriously - I get where you are trying to be logical...but it just sounds silly when you say "we get Artemi Panarin for Olli Maatta" out loud. Obviously it's a joke offer but if it were real, you just flip somebody else or even Panarin himself for something much better than Maatta.

A top 10 forward in the league for a bottom pairing Dman?
Panarin is not a top ten forward. And Maata is not a bottom pairing defender. Panarin is worth more then Maata, but he is also a free agent to be which lowers his value. Jackets if they deal Panarin wont be looking at defenders as they have a stacked defense. They also wont be getting any elite young center for a rental winger either. Their best bet is to keep him and hope he re signs or if not trade him for a package of picks and prospects

Doesn't matter if PIT needs D. Doesn't matter if Panarin is a UFA and the Pens can't afford him long term. Doesn't matter if the Pens have zero need for Panarin. This is as no-brainer as it comes in a trade proposal. PIT accepts this within 5 seconds of that offer being presented.

Say whuuuuut.

Dear Columbus fans,

Sorry about this. Please don't kill yourself laughing.

Maatta gets underrated a lot, but damn that would be unfair...
