Painting Helmet Vents?

Before heads explode I KNOW that painting a helmet is dumb and weakens the plastic and comes off and looks terrible.

This is why I ask. My little guy who is 10 plays rep hockey non contact. Well his regular team due to politics will be taking a year off to move leagues. Due to his regular team colors being Navy and powder blue will not work with the Black and Orange of the team he is playing for this season. Luckily he has a black Bauer Re-akt 75 in all black that we bought this summer for ball hockey. But the coach prefers the vents on the helmet to be orange. Well as he already owns 2 $160 helmets buying a 3rd is just not something I want to do.

Sooooooo I was wondering if there was a way to paint the vents orange. I bought some 3M vinyl which works but it's a pain. I was thinking Orange krylon fusion and super light coats. I added a picture to show you what I mean except his helmet is all black.

That's pretty idiotic. Helmet fit is what's most important for the player's safety, and each model fits differently. What if the only helmet model that's available with orange vents doesn't fit properly? Is it worth compromising the player's safety for the right look? Of course not. And painting the vents can make the helmet unsafe. I wonder how many players on the team are wearing helmets that don't fit properly for the sake of having orange vents. I hope the coach's preference is just that, a preference and not a requirement.

That's so annoying. Socks, pants, and jersey match, but he needs to have the vents too? At 10? Lol. If it must be done, the safest way would be using bright orange tape, I'd think, and scissors. If it's gotta be paint, then tape around the area to protect it, and some tape inside the helmet vents to make sure that none gets onto the interior padding. I don't know what krylon fusion is, but I know that krylon makes glossy paints and you'd probably want to make sure it's that, and not semi or matte. Good luck ;/

I personally would think Plasti-dip would be the safest option....if U put enough light coats, U can peel it off if you wanna go back to the original color....

Quite frankly, this is a case where you just say "yeah coach, I'll see what I can do" and then don't do **** about it. It's one season. What's the coach going to do, hold your kid off the ice because his air vents aren't matchy-matchy?

I'm not sure I've ever seen a more blatant case of parents being asked to do completely ridiculous things for all the wrong reasons.

I don't care if this is the best team a 10 year old can make in your city, territory, country, or the world for that matter.

The coach is complaining about the VENTS not being orange? I could see it being a problem if your kid had a bright yellow helmet while the rest of the team had black ones... but this is beyond nitpicking, this is just downright stupid... this is recreational hockey for kids, not semi pro.

As another poster stated... I'd say something along the lines of, "we'll see what we can do about it", and do absolutely nothing. If the coach really cared, he should buy some vinyl wrapping for the vents. Your kid's helmet is black, how the hell is that not good enough?

Wow...not at all what I was expecting when I opened this thread.

The coach is completely out to lunch......to the point I would strongly advise finding another team/association to play for (though I realize if if he has good friend's on the team that changes the equation) because if this is what he is worried about priorities are out of whack.
