Risto gets 6. Just hope they lock it up before someone else has the chance to offer him higher.

Girgensons gets 3. I think he has enough leverage to get at least a decent bridge.

Foligno is getting more than a 125,000 raise. I don't think anyone ever gets that little by sheer force of getting to a new contract.

Take a look at what their qualifiers will be, will be at least that much if they get qualified (only one who might not on your list would be Cat)

Assuming none get traded:

Risto - 5yrs, $29m ($5.8m AAV)
McCabe - 2yrs, $3m ($1.5m AAV)
Nelson - Qualifying Offer (around $972k)

Girgensons - 2yrs, $5m ($2.5m AAV) [w/the 2nd year being between $2.8 and $3.0 for added leverage in the future]
Foligno - 3yrs, $8.25m ($2.75m AAV) [has arb rights and buying one UFA year]
Deslauriers - 1yr, $750k
Catenacci - Qualifying Offer

What is Foligno's QO? A one year deal/accepting the QO might make the most sense for both sides.

I think his QO is the same as his AAV given that he makes more than $1m. (Or it may be the same as his last annual salary ($2.25m), I'm not sure and I don't have the CBA accessible.)

He'd never take it, though. He has arbitration rights.

Players making more than $1m have to be offered 100% of their previous season's salary (not cap hit), so he's be getting the 1yr 2.25m QO at a minimum.

As for whether or not he'd take it or elect arbitration, that would more depend on the contracts of comparable players, no? Arbitration is only leverage (to the player) if he is underpaid relative to his peers, and still only gets him a 1yr contract.

I think your 3yrs, $8.25m ($2.75m AAV) is probably about right, but I don't see how arbitration rights play into it at all if this is the contract he signs.

QOs are based on the previous year's paragraph 1 salary (meaning signing bonuses don't count, which only really matters for guys on their ELCs). Beyond that, it depends on what that salary was.
Up to (and including) $600,000: QO is 110% of previous year's salary
Between $600,000 and $1,000,000: QO is 105% of previous year's salary
$1,000,000 or greater: 100% of previous year's salary.

So here's the QOs for the Sabres RFAs
Catenacci: $632,500
Deslauriers: $715k
Foligno: $2.25M
Girgensons: $874,125
Guptill: $787,500
Jacobs: $632,500
Kasdorf: $632,500
Lieuwen: $665,500
Makarov: $632,500
McCabe: $874,125
Nelson: $874,125
Nevins: $660k
Ristolainen: $874,125

Obviously there are a few guys in that group who aren't getting qualified

I've been wondering why we haven't heard anything about contract talks with Risto. When he said he wouldn't play in the Worlds without a contract it seemed he was motivated to get a deal done. It's been so quiet I wonder if the two camps are really far apart or if they want to wait till after the draft.

I just figured Risto would be the first deal done in the offseason, maybe Jones and him are waiting for each other to set the pay scale. I think both will probably be about the same money and term.

I'm pretty sure that part of the holdup was waiting to find out whether there would be expansion and what were its parameters on future contracts. Bob Murray said that since everything has been decided that he can start working on signing his RFAs

Olli Maatta got 5 at 4.083 per, so 20.415M

Gotta believe Risto gets more than that but I doubt 6

I'd say 5 years at 5.5 per or 27.5 (maybe a tad less)

I'd start by offering 24M over 5 (4.8 per) but I know his agent is counting with 5 and 30M. Meet in the middle giving a little more.

I still think Risto comes in higher, around $5.5-$6 million. What I see this doing is making GMs think their guy should sign in this range. I can see it leading to offer sheets if GMs decide to press the matter and hold out another GM will sweep in with an offer on a defenseman in that 1st, 2nd, 3rd compensation range.
