Looking at the number of young players who played a prominent role on the Marlies Calder Cup team, have there been any C.C. champions in the past whose teams were made up mainly of younger players similarly to the Marlies. For reference, here is a comparison of young prospects from this year's Marlies and last year's C.C. champions the Grand Rapids Griffins

Marlies
----------
Garrett Sparks
Andreas Borgman
Travis Dermott
Timothy Liljegren
Andrew Nielsen
Calle Rosen
Jeremy Bracco
Pierre Engval
Frederik Gauthier
Carl Grundstrom
Andreas Johnson
Dmytro Timashov

Griffins
-----------
Joe Hicketts
Filip Hronek
Tyler Bertuzzi
Martin Frk
Axel Holmstrom

Have there been other teams in the past comprised of as many prospects as the Marlies had this year?

So basically you are saying Seattle is going to get a good one from Toronto.

Most Calder cup teams are pretty similar. Really hard to read into them.
2014-2015 Monarchs had a similar amount of young (sub 22) prospects from LA... Jordan Weal was 22 years old and going PPG
2013-2014 Texas Stars had a fair amount, with Brett Ritchie going gangbusters until injury.

Seems pretty standard. It's fun to win these though, I wish Stockton would surround their team with some more vets because they've been a ridiculously young team now for the past couple seasons. It's just a mixed bag, these guys who MVP in the AHL playoffs at 21 can be easily overshadowed by the guy scoring 30 points middle the way up the lineup, at the same age, for the same team in the NHL.

The AHL roster structure is pretty much determined by the AHL veteran rule:

Of the 18 skaters (not counting two goaltenders) that teams may dress for a game, at least 13 must be qualified as “development players.” Of those 13, 12 must have played in 260 or fewer professional games (including AHL, NHL and European elite leagues), and one must have played in 320 or fewer professional games. All calculations for development status are based on regular-season totals as of the start of the season.

Using the players who played most of the playoff games:

Toronto 2018
6 veterans -- Smith, Mueller, Greening, Marincin, LoVerde, Aaltonen
10 prospects U24 -- Johnsson, Moore, Grundstrom, Timashov, Marchment, Engvall, Gauthier, Brooks, Dermott, Liljegren
2 older development players -- Holl, Rosen
goal -- Sparks, Pickard

Grand Rapids 2017
6 veterans -- Street, Tangradi, Callahan, Ford, Paetsch, Lashoff
6 prospects U24 -- Bertuzzi, Frk, Svechnikov, Hicketts, Renouf, Turgeon
6 older development players -- Nosek, Lorito, Criscuolo, Russo, McIlrath, Campbell
goal -- Coreau, Pasquale

Lake Erie 2016
5 veterans -- Craig, Eminger, Vogelhuber, Sifers, Falk
11 prospects U24 -- Bjorkstrand, Sedlak, Werenski, Anderson, Zaar, Broadhurst, Hannikainen, Milano, Rychel, Kukan, Heatherington
2 older development players -- Chaput, Tynan
goal -- Forsberg, Korpisalo

Manchester 2015
6 veterans -- Backman, LoVerde, van der Gulik, Bodnarchuk, Schultz, Bissonnette
10 prospects U24 -- Mersch, Weal, Shore, Miller, Kempe, O'Brien, Forbort, Gravel, Crescenzi, Auger
2 older development players -- O'Neill, Dowd
goal -- Berube, Bartosak

The only thing AHL teams can vary is the amount of older development players who are 24 years or older but come with less than 260 pro games. Looks like Grand Rapids capitalized on a market inefficiency ;)

From the Lake Erie and Manchester development player groups, only two have not played in an NHL game: Daniel Zaar and Zach O'Brien (plus backup goalie Bartosak).

(note: for "U24" I used end of season age)

The Marlies do have a good group of prospects. I know they were discussing Johansson making the Leafs next yr. Liljegren's good as well. Sparks might be Andersen's backup in 2018-2019.

Hershey bears made the finals in 15-16. They seem to be prospect heavy.

Syracuse Crunch in 12-13. Also lot of good players on that team.
