First Attempt at a Mock Draft

1 New York Islanders - John Tavares - Franchise Player and Marketing Dream for an Islanders team desperate for money.

2 Tampa Bay Lightning - Victor Hedman - Consensus No.2 choice compared to Pronger without a mean streak.

3 Colorado Avalanche - Matt Duschene - A solid skater and perfect guy to replace Joe Sakic as the Av's No.1 Center of the future.

4 Atlanta Thrashers - Evander Kane - Good size, loves to play the body is amazing with the puck, perfect guy to center Kovalchuk for years to come. Also had an amazing workout combine and WJC.

5 Los Angeles Kings - Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson - Amazing skating ability and great playmaker with some finish will look great playing next to Kopitar in a few years.

6 Phoenix Coyotes - Brayden Schenn - Great size and a complete forward who can also play the body. *** I see the Leafs trading a mid round pick or prospect to the Coyotes to move up to his spot and select him.

7 Toronto Maple Leafs - Jared Cowen - Big D-man who can create plays on offence and shut down players on defence. I seem him being at the worst a top four defenceman.

8 Dallas Stars - Dmitri Kulikov - His style of play is very similar to a fellow defenceman, Segei Zubov of the Stars and who better to mentor him then well, Sergei Zubov.

9 Ottawa Senators - Oliver Ekman-Larsson - I read somewhere that the Senators were heavily scouting a Euro D-man not named Hedman and had to think it was this guy.
10 Edmonton Oilers - Scott Glennie - Fast, great hands and scoring ability who is a gritty player. Better yet he has size something the Oilers need in their Top 6.

11 Nashville Predators - Nazem Kadri - Great playmaker, good skater with decent speed should someday be the Predators No.1 or 2 center someday.

12 Minnesota Wild - Jordan Schroder - Hard for Minnesota to pass on being a hometown kid and also has shown he has great playmaking and scoring ability along with a decent build at the workout combine.

13 Buffalo Sabres - Jacob Josefson - Good two-way player with great hockey sense and size. See's the ice well and excellent in traffic because of his stickhandling skills. Safe pick for the Sabres because of his strong two-way game.

14 Florida Panthers - Simon Despres - Big physical defenceman from the "Q" is a safe pick to play in NHL someday. Great all-around defenceman with good speed. Could turn out to make a lot of teams regret on passing on him a few years down the road. Also with rumours floating that Bouwmeester is leaving could be a perfect replacement.

15 Anaheim Ducks - Peter Holland - Big power forward who can play on both the PP and PK. Anaheim grabs him for Getzlaf to mentor him in hopes that he can have a similar impact as Getzlaf.

16 Columbus Blue Jackets - Ryan Ellis - The Blue Jackets take a gamble on this undersized D-man from Windsor and hope he continutes the trend of scoring wherever he plays. Also has a great shot and can QB the PP could turn out to be a steal if he continues his scoring trend.

17 St. Louis Blues - John Moore - With few potential top pairing defenceman the Blues grab Moore because he of his world class skating and offensive potential.

18 Montreal Canadiens - Chris Kreider - They passed on Esposito last year and I have a feeling they pass on Leblanc to. Hometown prospects just can't handle the intense spotlight in Montreal (ex. Latendresse). Instead they grab Kreider who fits their style as a fast and quick player with exceptional playmaking ability. Also has decent size.

19 New York Rangers - Louis Leblanc - With the Rangers lack of a true No.1 center prospect they grab Leblanc for his great vision, hands and competetiveness. Also has a strong work ethic.

20 Calgary Flames - David Rundblad - The Flames grab Rundblad for his great shot and being a smart player. This kid could be another shooting specialist on their PP along with Dion Phaneuf.

21 Philadelphia Flyers - Zack Kassian - The Flyers can't ignone this kid's size and he just oozes with potential. Big, physcial and can work the boards well should be a perfect match up nicely with Philly's already physical team.

22 Vancouver Canucks - Calvin De Haan - With no top pairing defenceman in their system IMO I think the Canucks go with De Haan who has great hockey sense,a great and passing ability. Also has amazing poise and patience for a kid his age.

23 New Jersey Devils - Carter Ashton - The Devils grab the son of Brent Ashton who at one point played with the Devils during his career. Carter is a power forward type player who can drive the net hard and put the puck in the net.

24 Washington Capitals - Landon Ferraro - The Capitals grab Ferraro hoping to get a goal scoring No.2 for the future. Won the Fastest Skater competition at the 2009 CHL Top Prospects game. Ferraro is also excellent defensively. If he goes on to have a career anything like his dad's look for this kid to be a steal.

25 Boston Bruins - Jordan Caron - The Bruins grab Caron for his size and shooting ability. Caron has a great shot from the wing and works very hard for his goals.

26 New York Islanders (from San Jose) - Stefan Elliot - The Islanders grab Elliot as he is a solid two-way defenceman who can put up points and has decent size. Stefan is also a great PP quarterback and could learn from one of the best in Mark Streit.

27. CAR - Zack Budish - The Canes who could potentially lose Erik Cole this summer grab his heir to their power forward role. Budish is a big body who is very physical and has a great shot. Budish also creates rooms and makes plays happen along the boards with his size and physicality. I think the Cane's possibly look past his injury riddled campaign this year and grab him.

28. CHI - Tim Erixon -With very few weaknesses in their system the Hawks grab Erixon in hopes that he can QB their PP for years to come. He is a solid two way defenceman with decent size.

29. PIT - Jeremy Morin - With few goal scoring prospects in their system the Penguins grab Morin despite his apparent attitude issues. Morin is a pure goal scorer something the Pen's could use to play with Crosby.

30. DET - Kyle Palmieri - With little forward depth in their system the Wings grab Palmieri after a strong workout combine in which scouts raved about his build. Also reminds them of Chris Drury and if that's any indication of the career he will they are glad to take this kid with the last pick in the first round.

Let me know what you guys think. Comments are appreciated!

NYI - 2nd pick #26

Respectfully, I do not think NYI will chose another smallish offensive d-man with the likes of Jack Hillen, Mark Katic and Aaron Ness in the organization.

Yeah I just threw this together quick and I'm not overly familiar with NYI's prospects. I'm going to revise this order a bit after the Stanley Cup finals and I will most certainly take that into accounts. Thanks for your input!

If Kassian is available at 19 the Rangers will most likely take him.

But do you think they pass on Leblanc who could be the solution to their woes at center with them trying to trade either Drury or Gomez. Leblanc is also seen as more of a project so will have lots of time to fill out his body and improve his game until one of them is out of town. I'm not claiming to be an expert because I lack knowledge of many of the Eastern teams prospects but Kassian also had a less than impressive playoffs also. I have also read that his skating is not quite up to par even for a kid of his size so would the Rangers be willing to risk picking him at the expense of possibly becoming a bottom 6 forward. Just my two cents and thanks for the comment.

Pittsburgh's needs

I think there is one thing that the Penguins need and that is a goal scoring winger. I dont know their pipeline very well but from what I see Pierro Zabotel is their best wing prospect and I would compare him too Ryan Malone and the syle he plays. When Kelowna played Vancouver in the WHL Playoffs the focus was on Kane not Zabotel. I dont Kreider would go as high as 18 as high school kids are the hardest to judge. If I had an 18th overall pick I would take Carter Ashton over a high school kid. Honestly I dont think high schoolers and Jr.A's should go first round. I mean USA Jr.A I am ok with going round one because its like their highest junior level. But definitely not high schoolers who sometimes play against kids in grade 8. Yes they are playing more against players their own age but kids in Junior are always playing with kids their age or older. Late 20's and beyond is when "Projects" like high schoolers and Canadian Jr.A players should be taken, but thats just my opinion. As for you mock I think its good and I agree with just about everything. Like the one guy said your tope ten or 9 I think without any trades is exact.

Yeah I had trouble making up my mind on that pick and the only reason that persuaded me to do this was mention of him being the best skater in the draft and scouts saying they weren't even sure if there is many players in the NHL right now that can skate as good as him. For the past few years I have viewed the Canadiens as more of a skating team in which case sways them in the direction of Kreider. As for the Pittsburgh pick I couldn't agree with you more but I'm not sure there is a good enough winger for them to take a chance on with that pick. But if I had to throw some names out for that pick it would go Palmieri (who I have heard he played wing from on various reports but not positive), Rajala (where his size obviously comes into question), Carl Klindberg ( who's scoring touch I question but have to love his size and physicality) and my wild card Erik Haula (who has already come over to NA to learn the game, and scouts say hes a very good skater with good skills and lots of upside potential, but once again his size comes into question). Thanks for your comment I really appreciate it!
