Good post, scouting and development throughout the years has led to what we are going through now. People who think we are deliberately tanking need to look at how awful our scouting and development has been. Just completely inept. This is the team after all who employed a scout living in Mexico full time......

Great response.

We've been that screwed up for that long.

I glanced over this with a workmate while in the office between classes.

Man... why have people only been egging us on about our drafting and development for the past few years? I know that we lacked an AHL team of our own before a few years ago.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that we were sending our prospects to Montreal's farm team.

I'm not going to talk about guys who were traded and turned into good players. I'm just going to list players that made a difference playing for us.

1998-1999 didn't have a single guy who would contribute anything significant for us.

In 2000 Comrie showed up and we got scraps. Rob Schremp never turned into NHL material.
2000 also had Horcoff. Considering he was a mid rounder we should be pretty happy what we got out of him. His last contract was poison, but you can't blame him for that. You can blame Lowe for signing it. We all knew that was a horrid contract the minute it was announced. If your boss offered you a raise that entitled you to make 50% more money than you were worth, I'm pretty sure you'd accept that extra dough.

2001 featured the coming of Marc-Andre Bergeron and Ty Conklin. They may not have been great for us, but they did play a fair number of games.

2002 had Stoll and Hemsky. Great players, but they were not all that hard to dig out of the rough since they were drafted quite high. Hemsky was a first rounder. Stoll was either a late first rounder or an early second rounder. Now at this point

2003 Greene makes his way onto the scene. Pretty sure he was a 2nd rounder. He came exactly as advertised and hasn't changed since then. Rough and tough stay at home guy with hands of stone.

Green and Stoll were traded for a 1st pairing PMD and Lubo was a great d-man but I don't think that many people realized how weak that trade left our core before that trade was made.

In 2004 another 2nd rounder, Tom Gilbert was traded. He was a relatively useful guy but we had too many soft d-men around to really care about what he was getting done. I was OK with trading him for Nick Schultz. Schultz was far more consistent. I think that was the most fair trade that Edmonton has been involved in that didn't involve prospects in the past decade.

2005 has nothing going on.

Devan Dubnyk was drafted really high for a goalie. And that's all that we saw out of 2006.

In 2007 fellow 1st rounders Cogliano and Smid make their way onto the scene. Man did that Pronger trade ever suck. Don't get me wrong. There were a few years where I loved the hell out of Smid, but I wasn't broken up into tears to see the guy go. He'd somehow lost his effectiveness. That guy worked his ass off to become a much better player for us. He was so soft when he came to Edmonton but boy did we ever get some grit out of him down the road.

In 2008 1st rounder Eberle (whom everyone said was too small and too slow to make a difference in the NHL) and 2nd rounder Petry made their way into our attention span.

In 2009 1st rounder Magnus and 3rd rounder Lander were drafted and made their way to the top of our prospect rankings. Not sure if Lander should be here yet. I put Magnus here because he helped us get Perron, who is one of my fav forwards to show up in Edmonton for a long time.

2010 has 1st overall pick Hall and 2nd rounder Marincin. The only other guy from this year that has a shot at making it is Curtis Hamilton. He was a 2nd or third rounder who had a lot of offence in the WHL. Before this season he's been useless in the AHL. I suspect it's because it was hard for him to get used to not being one of the bigger guys on the ice. He's putting up better numbers this year, but he isn't lighting up the NHL by any means. I bet he'll play a few games in the NHL but at this point only a fool would bank on him becoming a full time NHLer.

2011 on paper looks like a great year. Hopkins was a first overall pick. Pitlick would be a fine guy to play an Alexander Burrows role if he could stay healthy. Musil is tough and consistent. He won't be great in the NHL but he'll be a nice guy to have in the line-up when you're playing a tough team. Gernat will probably turn into a 3rd pairing d-man who can log a bunch of minutes on the PP. Klefbom Is looking like a stud. And I'm pretty sure that all but one of these guy were drafted within the first 2 rounds.

Past 2012... it's too soon to point fingers at who is what... and maybe I'm being too optimistic with what's going on with what we have in the system right now, but it's obvious that we've got nothing going on in the 4th round and past that. If this keeps up you'd think that Katz would offer Ken Holland 10M just to go in there and do the rehiring of all people within head office.

...and that list right there is why the Oilers are where they are. Sather drafted horribly, but he was at least able to fleece someone as needed in a trade that netted guys like Niinimaa, Hamrlik.

I know the draft is a bit of a crapshoot, but seriously, you'd think some blind guy, pulled in off the street, randomly pointing at a piece of paper with names written on it would have pulled off better picks then this.

I think that the development is equally at fault as the drafting.

That said, the rankings seem pretty decent...except the gem of JDD being an 8.5B. That's funny stuff right there.

Honestly... I remember reading in a thread on prospects about a study or something done on I think the canucks, it showed if they had just drafted top scorers at each pick they would have had more success. I think Oilers scouts need to stop outthinking themselves. Following the draft year in year out they seem to make ridiculous picks from the second round on... Just go with the best player already instead of trying to hit some sort of home run with a "hidden gem" or guy with size who has future potential. Draft the guys who have showed that potential already, forecasting potential doesn't seem like a strength for these scouts.

Looking at this post it seems like the drafting vs development issue has steadily moved from drafting being the problem to development being the problem.

I still think its drafting, even the great "developmental" teams like Tampa Bay have had some duds

like 6th overall pick Brett Connolly

The fact that hardly anyone is talking in this thread just goes to show how numbed we are towards this epic level of failure.

Well there's that. Some guys turned out. Having Horcoff and Pisani become NHL regulars isn't something insignificant, even if it's looked at that way.

I also wonder who was brought in via trade for some of these players. Salmalienen(sp) got the Oilers Spacek, so that was a success, just by a different metric.

Obviously, hindsight is always 20/20 and its easy to say "they should have drafted this guy or that guy instead of the player they drafted", but thats exactly what I am about to do :)...just for fun basically, who could they have drafted since 1997 onward as opposed to who they actually took. First round only:

1997: Michel Riesen
This was really not a great first round for most teams who drafted after the Oilers in the first round. Two notables: Scott Hannan and Brenden Morrow, each played around 1000 NHL games. Michel Riesen played 12.

1998: Michael Henrich
I actually give them a pass on this pick. At the time, Henrich was what they needed a goal scorer with some power to his game. Many called it a good pick...Still, hindsight being what it is, notables that went after Oilers picked are: Robyn Regehr, Scott Gomez (they did also need a center, as always), Simon Gagne and Jiri Fischer.

1999: Jani Rita
The need for speed did them in once again. I don't think Rita was ever considered to be a first line player, so to take him, and not say Martin Havlat is a crime. Granted, this appears to have been a weak first round if looking at impact players drafted not named Sedin. Stefan went first overall.

2000: Alexei Mikhnov
First of the "big reach" picks under Kevin Lowe. Common sense dictated that they should have taken any of: Brooks Orpik, Anton Volchenkov, Steve Ott, Justin Williams (yeah, that one...) or Niklas Kronwall

2001: Ales Hemsky
No complaints here. He is better than anyone who went after him, and probably #3 overall in the first round

2002: Jesse Niinimaki
Terrible pick...was then, is now...another reach and trying to be smarter than anyone. They couldn't even find the kid in the arena. Alexander Steen and Cam Ward would have been better, but really, the rest of the round was slim pickings.

2003: Marc Pouliot
They wanted him bad, didn't they. Ryan Kesler went immediately after to Vancouver, Mike Richards to Philly and Corey Perry to Anaheim. Good job on this one KLowe!

2004: Devan Dubnyk
2004: Rob Schremp

I actually don't have a problem here. Team needed a goalie prospect and Dubnyk was well thought off. Schremp was all skill and they needed that to. Some notabled taken in between these two picks: Alex Radulov, Travis Zajac, Wojtek Wolski and Andrej Meszaros

2005: Andrew Cogliano
Good pick, good player, should have been kept. Niskanen went after him but at the time Cogs was a "must have" pick, so no issues.

2006: no pick in first round, Jeff Petry taken in 2nd round.
Overall, no issues. They could have had Milan Lucic though, and perhaps should have, but the 20/20 thing...

2007: Sam Gagner
2007: Alex Plante
2007: Riley Nash

The start of the top picks for this team. At the time, the Gagner pick was good and even to date Sam has played more NHL games than anyone who went after him in the first round. Saying that, there are some who should have been picked: Voracek, even though prior to this season he was on par with Sammy, Kevin Shatenkirk, Ryan Mcdonough and Logan Couture.

The Plante pick was a reach as he couldn't skate and that would be his downfall. However, between him and Nash, all picks were misses.

After Nash, there was Pacioretty, Backlund and the guy they just traded, David Perron.

2008: Jordan Eberle
No issue and better than anyone who went after him.

2009: Magnus Paajarvi
He was a highly rated Euro prospect who drew comparisons to Peter Forsberg, although I am not sure why. It was considered at the time a good pick. The time proved something else, however. They could have had: Ryan Ellis, Dimitri Kulikov,Marcus Johansen or Simon Despres.

2010: Taylor Hall
No issue, and I still think he is the best player out of that draft

2011: Ryan Nugent Hopkins
I think its as good of a pick as Hall. Some debate they should have taken Landeskog or Adam Larsson.

2012: Nail Yakupov
Its turning out to be a bad pick, and Nail has to step it up quick unless he want to be Bonsignore v.2. Hindsight dictates that Galchenyuk was the better pick and will probably remain so.

2013 and 2014 are too early to tell, but both are looking as very solid picks.

There you have it. Looking at it, if they drafted better in earlier years, Hall and RNH probably would not be Oilers, but then would that be a bad thing if the team was solid to be a playoff team every year?

Good analysis. As much as I'm loathe to cut Oilers managment slack, the post-Oilers picks from 1997-2002 didn't exactly do a lot, 2005 and 2008 saw the Oilers pick better than expected, and post-2010, they've made 'easy picks'. That being said, the 2003 and (post-Gagner) 2007 picks were inexcusable, and the list excludes picks further-back that crippled the franchise (Bonsignore, Kelly > Doan, Jason Soules, pretty much every 1st round pick in early to mid-90s).

Just guessing, but that was probably just because he fell (he was the #3 ranked NA skater), and they wouldn't have done their due diligence, because they wouldn't think he'd fall to them. I've heard he's got some character issues
