Skating group at UPMC66 today: Sid, Dupuis, Kunitz, Plotnikov, Cole, Scuderi, Clendening, Oleksy, Zatkoff, Tyler Kennedy, Brandon Saad, Vincent Trochek, Stephen Johns and Oskar Sundqvist.

Great news Sundqvist is back on ice and in town.
Unexpected surprise all the local guys came out.

I dunno, it doesn't really surprise me that the local guys are there. It's NHL ice, it's mid/late August and it's local-ish with other NHL players. I think at times people forget that while these guys are not friends on the ice, many if not quite friends off the ice all know eachother.

Saad and J.T. Miller have been training at ICOP but the ice at UPMC66 is probably vastly superior so that's a no brainer.

Yea, i know it's not a rare thing. ie. NHL'ers grouping up in summers but it's rare that Sid's here earlier and theres a practice group, with this many NHL'ers already, in Pittsburgh.

I think Sid is going to go beast mode this year and the vets know that they are gonna have to work to get ice time with the new additions. Nice to see plots and Sundy showing some dedication too.

It's certainly the first time Pittsburgh has been an off-season destination. But between the UPMC facility and more and more Pittsburghers making the NHL it's going to become the norm, and we'll see even more next summer.

I think the vets only know how they've been treated so far, which is anything but that. Hopefully they're in for a rude awakening.

Awesome that Plots is out here already working out on NA ice.

I think he will noticed this season by everyone in the league. Not expecting the second coming of Lucic or Patty Kane...but I think this pick up is among the highest under-rated ones.

Exactly. I don't think the vets, especially Kunitz and Scuderi, feel that they have to worry about where they will fit in. I don't think Kunitz expects to be in any line but the first, maybe second, and Scuderi will have a spot among the top 6 defensemen. Both Scuderi and Kunitz will have an "A" on their sweaters as well.

Perhaps they are in for a rude awakening, but given past experience, I doubt it.

I think they have to be feeling the heat. Scuderi because of Gonchar's camp invite and Kunitz because Rutherford has discussed Plotnikov as a possible top 6 option (and if you count Hornqvist, Perron, & Kessel, that eliminates Kunitz).

Scuderi at least has to be feeling the heat because JR asked him to waive for a trade to Toronto. It might be the same for Kunitz. Who knows what Johnston and co will do, though. JR mentioned Plotnikov in the top 6 but Johnston called Perron a RW which would mean Kunitz still has his spot. On defense Johnston loves him some Pouliot and I think Dumoulin was implied to be a lock, so it could come down to Lovejoy vs Scuderi.

The coaching staff might stop the preferential treatment, but JR will flat out need to open up cap space and those two are prime candidates to do that with. At minimum they have to be aware of that.

It should be that simple. I wish it were that simple.

But Perron was kicked out of the top 6 last year when Kunitz was busy scoring 1 ES goal in all of 2015. I doubt anything's changed in the pecking order since then.

Yeah, I'll be absolutely floored if Plotnikov is in the top six over Kunitz. Like, astonished. But hey, maybe MJ just didn't wanna step on anyone's toes in his first season and didn't wanna offend anyone before he was sure he'd be safe.

Here's to hoping beyond hope that Plotnikov tears it up in camp/pre-season and pushes Kunitz out of the top six... And ultimately off the team.

I would actually not be that surprised if Lovejoy were to be an odd man out. That's wrong when Rob Scuderi's still in the lineup, but coaches have some weird hangup with guys like Scuds. Not just Johnston; they all seem to have a problem understanding that a guy like him is past the expiration date..

That's where you hope management steps in and reminds them of the salary cap. Lovejoy is fine especially for his cap hit. Scuds, he has no place on this team anymore.

I dunno. Rutherford acknowledged that trading Despres for Lovejoy was a mistake, but I don't think the Pens will be so quick to dispose of him without some return on investment. How bad would it look to drop Lovejoy like a hot potato 6 months after trading a great young defenseman for him?

Ugh. The more I think about it, the more I fear both are gonna be in the line-up.

Cole - Letang
Maatta - Lovejoy
Scuderi - Gonchar

Demoted: Pouliot.

Waived: Dumoulin, Erixon, Clendening.

Suicidal thoughts: HF Pens Board.

Wow, that would be terrible assett management, that better not happen. No way should Dumoulin be given away for free
