Didn't take long for old friend Shawn Thornton to go to the press box.

Shawn Thornton played two games for his new employer before he was sent to the press box against Ottawa on Monday. Florida coach Gerard Gallant replaced the tough guy on the fourth line with Jimmy Hayes. The former Boston College forward doesn’t have Thornton’s toughness or experience. But he’s younger, faster, and plays with more skill. Thornton’s two-year contract was yet another questionable move by GM Dale Tallon. Being a healthy scratch after only two games does not signal good things for the ex-Bruin. The league was never kind to 37-year-olds. It’s even less hospitable now that more teams are going without enforcers. Toronto assigned Colton Orr and Frazer McLaren to the AHL before the start of the season. Ottawa let Matt Kassian walk. Boston, Detroit, and Tampa Bay don’t carry tough guys. Remaining dance partners include Prust (Montreal) and Cody McCormick (Buffalo). It will be easy for Gallant to bench Thornton when fisticuffs are not required.
