Steven Fogarty won round 17. Dany Kristo is added to the poll.

Please write who you want added to the poll, and give a reason for it. This makes the discussion here more lively.

THE RULES

WHO IS A PROSPECT: http://www.hockeysfuture.com/whatmakesaprospect

HOW TO RANK PROSPECTS: Based on their value in a hypothetical trade or waiver draft. This takes into consideration a prospect's ceiling, how close he's to making it, his health, work ethic, the whole deal. Imagine there was a prospect waiver draft and you could keep only one prospect. That guy is our #1 prospect. Then imagine we had one more waiver protection. That guy is our #2 prospect.

Voted for Hughes who has done more in the AHL already than most of these guys ever will. A top-4 AHLer at the age of 22 deserves to be up there finally.

Add Sam Noreau. Big defensemen take longer than anyone, except goalies, to develop so it's no shame for him to still be in the ECHL. In fact, unlike guys like Donnay, Walcott, etc, he did not need an overager season and went straight to the pros (and yes, the ECHL is a superior league to the Canadian Juniors). The guy is actually tougher than McIlrath. A bit slow, but a huge punishing crease-clearing defenseman is valuable even if he's just a #6D.

We really should be very careful with overagers. Unless they absolutely dominate in their overager season, they tend to be ECHLers. Chris Chappell was about the same size as Richard Nejezchleb, had similar offensive product, was tougher, better defensively... and couldn't even keep up in the AHL. There are a ton of these examples to the point where Chris Chappell is very much the rule and not the exception.

Overagers who become successful NHLers usually dominate in the OA season, and even then they are just as likely to become minor leaguers as NHLers. Look at Callahan - he scored almost a goal a game (52 in 62) in the regular season and had almost two points per game in the playoffs. All this plus a tremendous overall game. I remember going to the Rangers preseason game the September after he left Guelph and my first impression was, "this kid can't possibly keep up this pace"... and yet he did just that his whole career. So between Cally's defense, leadership, hustle and offensive skill, he was just a dominant junior player in his OA season.

Being merely "good" in your OA year means you will be in the ECHL or at most you'll be an ok player in the AHL. You are older than everyone and if you hope to make the NHL, you need to also be more talented than the vast majority of the league. The combination of age and talent should make you dominant, not merely good.

Only 22 prospects in the entire system and not top heavy either.

Kristo. Add Nicholls. I'm the only one holding out hope that the kid can at least be productive in Hartford.
