In a vacuum, price paid for player is good bargain bin hunting.
Unfortunately, it will cost more than McKegg + Hunt $ to extend so unless we win the Cup and he is instrumental, which odds are against, it will be a waste.
Exception would be if Trouba lets us deal him early, but that is also long odds.

Georgiev and Strome money will go too. I wouldn’t say re-signing is impossible. I suspect Nemeth gets moved too, but who knows.

very few teams have the space to take a guy on with no salary retention right now. Maybe he's a loyal enough Panther that they just traded a spy into our locker room to feed them back information in case we meet in the playoffs...

As someone else posted, Rangers had the cap space for the deal and while it would make for a gripping narrative, the chances of Frank Vatrano being the key to the Rangers beating the Panthers in the playoffs is, while not impossible, highly unlikely.

Kraken just confirmed that Gio is not playing tonight, despite his 1000th game celebration, good chance he gets moved as well. No way to be sure but Vatrano getting traded right after could be related.

It's not a waste if he helps make us a better team this year, whether we win the cup or not. It's a 4th round pick and it's not even our best 4th round pick. The odds of that pick helping us more in the future than Vatrano will now is slim.

I mean, the odds are greater that Vatrano plays more games for the Rangers this season alone than whatever that 4th round pick would in total in the future.

For a team that basically has a playoff spot locked up and is fighting for home-ice advantage this is a no brainer, almost no-risk move.

If Vatrano is the reason the Rangers hypothetically beat the Panthers in a playoff series, then Florida had other problems.

Totally agree, but not only could he possibly improve the team, but he could also be flipped to another club for a guy that really could tip the balance. It's just a very odd trade

I think Florida just wanted him gone ASAP so they can immediately clear up cap space for a bigger trade. If that means Vatrano had to go to an East playoff team, that’s a worthwhile risk for them.

186 points in 251 games with the Rangers. He’s got warts as a player and I prefer that Copp is prioritized in the off-season over him, but he was clearly utilized very poorly in Edmonton.

We didn't pay much and to be honest he's been a breathe of fresh air compared to other players we had in his spot/bottom 6 players. So even if this success disappears, it still wasn't a bad move to make. Anything that takes Hunt away from the top 6 is a good move. Laf was pushed to the 3rd line back on his original LW side, and Vatrano was given the top role with Kreider and Zibanejad. Is he a top line player? No. But it does help balance our roster out a bit.
