Solid job? Not really. He's done a mediocre job actually and if wasn't for the luck of winning the draft lottery TWICE, he'd probably be out of work.

He used a fluke inherited draft lottery winner in Adam Larsson (Devils were a 100 point team the season before and Cup Finals team the season after that draft) to trade for Taylor Hall, won the 2017 draft lottery to select Nico Hischier with just an 8.5% chance and then just won the 2019 draft lottery with just and 11.5% chance to select Jack Hughes.

They could have very well dropped down in both drafts and it would have been a different story and Devils fans wouldn't be as positive as they are right now. That's cutting it real close.

He's been really lucky and speaking of luck, if not for a gifted 5-on-3 in Game 3 against Tampa Bay in the 2018 playoffs, they would have been swept.

Shero is going into his fifth season as NJ's GM, has missed the playoffs 3 out of 4 seasons and it's time to stop blaming the previous GM and scouting staff. He's now had the luxury of benefiting from THREE draft lottery winning players either directly or indirectly. Most teams or franchises don't see that in their entire history, let alone 1 GM has them at their disposal within a 4-year period. There's really no more excuses to not put together a somewhat decent team.

He's really not done a good job, save for a couple of good trades. Other than that, there's no way he can get credit for draft lottery wins. Seems like the after glow of this weekend is making people forget about the mediocrity of Ray Shero.
He was left with a mess . Had little to no assets to work with and turned the roster around in 3 years . Yes he won the lottery twice but it’s not like Nico = mcdavid . Bratt Palms Hall Subban Boyqvist Smith Mueller Mackenzie and a stocked prospect poll is s little better than average work

Shero has done a great job, under the conditions. Lou left a wasteland of bad picks and unproductive, older UFAs. It's a miracle they even are competitive at this stage, considering the players Shero had to cycle through.

Exactly how long are you going to keep blaming the former GM and former scouting staff? That was asked in my initial post.

And one can say that even with winning TWO draft lotteries, using a previous draft lottery winner to make a trade, he very well might be continuing to make a "mess" by trading for a player who is getting injured with increasing frequency in Taylor Hall, a player selected #1 overall in Nico Hischier, who might not even be the best player taken in that draft and now entering his fifth season, other than Subban, that NJD defense can be considered a "wasteland".

What else does Shero have to show for himself besides some untested or inconsistent player like a Jesper Bratt and a relatively week prospect pool, save for Hughes?

But if pure luck in winning the draft lottery, which he should get ZERO credit for, 3 decent trades through 4 seasons and just 1 horrible playoff performance is considered a decent job, then the bar for being a quality GM in this league has certainly been lowered.

Imagine being this clueless.

Go back and look at the roster and the organizational depth when Ray took over 4 years ago. Most teams when they enter a rebuild have a stable of solid veterans that can be pawned off for draft capital (see NYR). The Devils have nada. Ray basically started from scratch and he has made numerous great trades to speed things up.

He isn’t clueless. How can you say that? Come on ZBC. As a devils fan I tend to agree with many of the things you said. But this I cannot stand behind. He isn’t clueless. He is out to lunch...and breakfast...and dinner...which are all at all-you-can-eat buffets of cluelessness.

The problem with this line of thinking is that you're taking every bit of "luck" and acting as if it exists in a vacuum and that subsequent moves were not informed by prior "luck." You have no idea what he would've done if we didn't get lucky so it's easy for you to whine. You'll never have to answer for the non-existent hypothetical you've mentioned.

And instead of viewing that playoff birth as an anomaly, it's far more reasonable to look at it as a nice bit of over-performance ahead of schedule - basically a preview of what some of our younger players are capable of at half capacity. His "couple" of good trades have equated to about 150+ points of career avg. offense from three guys alone in Hall, Palmieri and Subban. His veteran signings have been smart - Lovejoy, Boyle - in demand vets who are easily flipped at the deadline and, should you make the playoffs, they won't hurt you.

But I suppose you would've preferred that we overpay De Haan, Van Riemsdyk or any other ultimately middling player. To "compete." Please enlighten me more about the proper approach from 2015 onward. Would love to hear your master plan.

Winning the draft lottery helps. That's the point about that. If they don't make a marked improvement this season, there's no way it won't fall on Shero's lap. But there will still be some that will blame the previous GM and scouting department, as you can see in some of the terse replies above.

It's also significant to note that Devils fans would always criticize our Metro rival Pens for "tanking" and getting the #1 overall. Well we're kind of in the same boat now, with two in the last 2 years. Can't make fun of the Pens any more.

Shero better have some results and quick.

Unless one will blame Lou for the next 10 years or however long it will be if it ever comes to that.

This take is so hot my eyeballs are burning from reading it.

Palmieri, Vatanen, Subban, and Hall (whom you act as if he was a foregone conclusion) were all phenomenal moves. Grabbing a player like Bratt in the 6th and Smith in the 1st will pay dividends for years. You also forget to mention that even though the Devils won the lottery there was no consensus #1 between Nico and Nolan, and you'd be hard pressed to find anyone who thinks Ray made the wrong choice.

Evacuate the haterade, you'll feel relieved and lighter afterwards.

It goes well beyond hockey man. Do people talk about Brad Marchant this way? Nope.

What kind of bad guy records a video thanking management, fans, etc after getting traded? Some folk just have a personal issue with PK and it's up to them to figure out what it is.

Twice now he's been traded under questionable, head scratching circumstances and returns. Not yet a pattern but if it happens a 3rd time then maybe there's a problem with him being a team guy.

To be clear we don't know and probably never will but one thing that stands out about Subban is he tends to overshadow the teams he's on and generally not in a positive way. What he does off the ice not hockey related is a completely different subject and if you ask me should not be discussed in a thread like this.

I hope Subban is as big a cancer as the one we heard Hall was from Oilers fans
Outside of a few Preds fans claiming murmurings of "inside knowledge" suddenly, that's almost all Canadian media and/or the same shit Preds fans have been hearing since he got traded to us. There has been something "off" with the Preds since even within their President's Trophy season, but that could be any number of locker room/chemistry dynamics. I'm not sorry to see the media circus heading to NJ though, even if I do like Subban--I suspect the Preds players may appreciate some less attention heading the team's direction as well.

I agree... we rolled the dice and got extremely lucky in the draft... but what does tanking even mean?
what I like most about Shero is that he hasn't used his cap space impulsively and has collected a decent amount of young promising players on cheap contracts...he took advantage of his cap space and patience and landed a top pairing dman for pennies... and keep in mind Shero still has $25 million in cap space to improve the team... I think we'll be big players going into free agency.... and hopefully we can convince Hall to stay... I don't want to lose him for nothing though...
I'm very excited going into next season...

Except we didn't tank for it. Actually, the entire league can partially thank those Pens teams for the lottery existing in it's current form.

What if's are impossible to quantify so your point is moot anyway.

Regardless, it's obvious you just miss relic Lou. How about you chill with that and enjoy the ride? This is the first time to be truly excited since 2012 if you're a Devils fan.

Any Nashville fans care to comment on the status of Subban in terms of his health/injuries? Is he 100%?
How many minutes a night can he really handle on the top line?... Assuming that's where he's projected to play.
You know... for science.

well im not ruling that out as a possibility but Weber must incur a career ending injury at that point. The rule bending for LTIR with the Pronger and later Williams situation in LA is what the league is trying to prevent with long term contracts that Weber signed under. Lets look at current example Matt Duchene the guy can get a 7 year deal. And It looks like he will get that term and 9 mil to go with it. Should the team signing him bank on a LTIR situation too the last three years when he is 34 and his numbers declining and he is no longer a top 6 center, or is the 4 years up front worth the buy out of roughly 13.5 mil in real dollars and carrying 4.5 dead cap the remaining 3 years? The league is trying to control these inflated contracts but at every turn GM's continue to give them out. There must be an answer if the league remains under a cap. Or they could vote to resend the CAp and go back to years of domination of the league by the teams with the deep pockets. Enforcing the CBA is the only way to go right now.
Meh the nhl isn't going to considerably handicap one of their success stories in a non hockey market . They will either waive the penalty or allow them to spread it over more years . I think the argument of it being an offersheet deal they didn't negotiate is pretty fair.

And tbh I think if Luongo retires with a year left they will let Vancouver take it over more years as well instead of just destroying a teams cap

Unless Subban is given the C he is not the #1 guy.
Subban will absolutely be the #1 guy on our blueline
and at the same time he'll be taking pressure off Severson, Vatenen and Butcher... there is nothing negative about this trade in my eyes...
as for the locker room stuff... I've heard the same rumblings about Hall... but guess what? he went on to win the Hart with NJ...

You just keep smoking that weed and believing this. Bettman does not control the board of gouverners who put this in the CBA he can not waive a wand and grandfather this the BOG would have to to this. As to the personal attack for me following other teams, well I have followed the NHL for 45 years. I have changed favorite teams a few times. I still pull for the Preds but they are not my primary team. You might want to broaden your hockey view and watch other teams and you could learn what makes a strong team and what delusional thinking wishes and hopes do.
Wait, you abandoned the Preds to become a Tampa fan?

That's... Interesting.

And why would the NHL give the Devils $ and a 1st rounder back for the Kovy debacle and not at least (strongly) consider giving the Preds relief?

Given the never ending tire fire in Edmonton there are going to be "rumblings" what else is new. Heck I've even talked to some Oilers fans that are blaming McDavid.

But you said #1 "go to guy" in NJ, no qualifier.
