Now that the draft and FA is out of the way and we are entering the lull of the offseason I can not imagine the team changing much between now and opening night. So what are everyone's predictions going into the season assuming Marner signs and Hyman/Dermott return from injury?

Im thinking something like this:

Kerfoot - Matthews - Nylander
Mikheyev - Tavares - Marner
Johnsson - Spezza - Kapanen
Moore - Shore - Hyman

Muzzin - Barrie
Rielly - Ceci
Dermott - Harpur

Andersen
Hutchinson

I would like to see:

Johnsson - Matthews - Nylander
Hyman- Tavares - Marner
Moore - Kerfoot - Kapanen
Petan/Mikheyev - Spezza/Shore - Spezza/Shore

Agostino
Gauthier

Rielly - Barrie
Muzzin - Ceci
Dermott - Harpur

Marincin
Holl

Andersen
Hutchinson

4th line could change a ton and have the extra 2 guys in and out

Harpur position could have other 2 guys come in and out

The fact that people keep putting Kerfoot on the wing and Spezza at 3rd like C baffles me. It’s clear they acquired him to be a center. Also Nick shore needs to be in the lineup due to him being the only natural center who PK’s.

Anyways, when everyone’s healthy....

Hyman-Tavares-Marner
Johnsson-Matthews-Nylander
Mikheyev-Kerfoot-Kapanen
Moore-Spezza-Shore
Petan

Muzzin-Barrie
Rielly-Ceci
Harpur-Dermott
Marincin-Holl (Borgman has a two-way)

Andersen-Hutchinson

Hyman and Dermott are out.

Hyman won't be on the 4th line when he returns.

Im starting to like the idea of Reilly-Barrie pairing. There was an article in the athletic about Barrie that raised a lot of good points. Essentially teams focused on our LD on the breakout since the RD were all weak puck movers. Having Reilly on the L and Barrie on the R is a defensive nightmare for the opposition who now have to spread out and respect both D vs focus on the expected carrier. Basically significantly reduces coverage on 2 D who already have elite metrics despite being the only puck-mover on their pairing.

AJ-Matthews-Nylander
Moore-Tavares-Marner
Mikheyev-Kerfoot-Kapanen
Agostino-Spezza-Shore

Muzzin-Barrie
Rielly-Ceci

But knowing Babcock, he'll likely start Kerfoot on the wing until he can prove himself defensively:

AJ-Matthews-Nylander
Moore-Tavares-Marner
Kerfoot-Spezza-Kapanen
Agostino-Shore-Mikheyev

Finally, when healthy, I like:

Hyman-Matthews-Nylander
Johnsson-Tavares-Marner
Moore-Kerfoot-Kapanen
Mikheyev-Spezza-Shore
I agree with the reuniting of the Hyman-Matthews-Nylander line! Get back to what works. Tavares and Marner will be fine with anyone

What I'd like to see:

Nylander - Matthews - Marner
Johnsson - Tavares - Kapanen
Mikheyev - Kerfoot - Hyman
Agostino - Spezza - Moore

Give the top 6 a lot of minutes.

Hyman - Matthews - Nylander
Johnsson - Tavares - Marner
Spezza - Kerfoot - Kapanen
Micheyev - Gauthier - Moore

Play lines 1 and 2 19-22 minutes a night
Play lines 3 and 4 8-14 minutes a night

Rielly - Barrie
Muzzin - Ceci
Dermott - Harpur

Have the power play set up be -

Tavares - Matthews - Marner - Nylander - Barrie where Barrie is the shot from the point, Nylander and Marner set up from the boards, Tavares remains net front and Matthews floats.

Rielly is great, but he can't shoot for beans from the point. That's never going to be respected and therefore he becomes a 3rd playmaker on the pp. Add to that the lack of movement and we have an abysmal power play as was evidenced for most of last season.

Spezza - Johnsson - Kapanen - Rielly - Dermott as power play unit 2. Traditional 3-2 set up. Players from up and down the line-up and maximizing Spezza's skill while minimizing his skating impediment.
