Now looking back, do the Sharks regret trading for Erik Karlsson in 2018?

Flashback to the Erik Karlsson to San Jose trade, what 5 years ago? Sharks window was starting to close then and they had a couple more years to push for a cup. But they gave up two picks which turned out to be Stutzle and Norris for Karlsson. A steep price to pay but a hell of a return for Ottawa.

For shark fans was this trade worth it or did it set the organization back many years?

Based on what happened it was an awful trade.

However, if they had gotten last year's version of Karlsson in that first season they probably win the Stanley Cup.

I get why they made the gamble, it just didn't pay off. The unprotected pick was the biggest issue. Change that one piece and it's a wash.

They probably regret covid a lot more.

They went to the conference finals in 2019. Then signed Karlsson to a big deal with the expectation that the cap would continue to go up at 2-3 million per year after that, especially with the new TV deal. Had that happened they, we'd be looking at a ~$95 million cap right now.

Instead covid happened.

Dont worry about it
Agreed, the trade itself wasn’t bad it was the decision to ultimately extend an injury prone 30 year old to a record contract. That partnered with the Kane extension did the damage ultimately and made it so the 3rd overall went to Ottawa.

If they didn't have Karlsson, they wouldn't have been so bad defensively and wouldn't have gotten the 3rd overall pick. :)

If Covid didn't happen the cap would have went up and the team could have been better. Without Karlsson, they have more cap space. It's just not as simple as they could have had the 3rd overall pick instead of Karlsson.

They ere already an aging team on its least legs so yea, giving up a bunch of futures for a 30 year old d-man wasn't a great idea, let alone giving him the biggest contract ever for a defensemen.

Only to flip him for peanuts 5 years later.

+1 on this. DW's entire strategy as a GM towards his later tenure was to assume that the cap would continue rising. Wrong in retrospect. Is there a team for which the lack of a rising cap hurt more than for the sharks? probably not. covid really ruined our cap structure.

Yes and no. They could really use a stutzle and norris right now, but it gave the team some extra life for a few more seasons. Hard to pass up a possible cup run.

Easily the Leafs. They signed their big deals in the 18-19 season and then covid happened.

Wilson's strategy wasn't even wrong. Cap goes up every year in every other league. It took a once in a century event for stop it in the NHL. Even the NBA and NFL saw a cap decrease and they make magnitudes more money.

It was a good trade for the Sharks. What followed afterwards is just fodder for Monday morning quarterbacks to discuss on online chat boards.

Least favorite team in the league from split fandom. The trade itself was fine for a team competing with other bidders and who still had a realistic chance to go on a cup run. As others have noted, the contract is the problem. The more the Sharks slipped into lottery team range, the worse it got.

Personally I'm just glad Vegas didn't outbid them. I think in the long run it would've hurt more than helped.

It's basically Stutzle and Norris for Karlsson, the rest was garbage? I mean, Sens aren't complaining, and the Sharks have what now? :dunno:

Sharks and leafs did get very screwed

Sharks 2019 start of season contracts included
Karlsson 11.5Mx8 (2019)
Kane 7Mx7 (2018)
Burns 8Mx8 (2016)
Vlasic 7Mx8 (2017)
Couture 8Mx8 (2018)
Jones 5.8x6 (2017)

Leafs 2019 start of season contracts included
Matthews 11.6Mx5 (2019)
Tavares 11Mx8 (2018)
Marner 10.9x6 (2019)
Nylander 7Mx6 (2018)

Pretty brutal for both.
