Thinking this is a Palmieri-esque move for a guy who can help steady a pair for one of our offensive dmen.

Yeah I didn't think Washington would protect him and the Devils will have an open spot (and likely expose Butcher). I haven't watched Siegenthaler much recently but thought he might be a fit as a stay at home PK type to replace Kulikov/Murray. Hopefully works out better than Mirco Mueller.

Only Subban, Severson and Butcher meet the exposure requirements, but you have to protect three and expose one, so they added Siegenthaler.

They could've gone 8-1 and protected six forwards, I guess. But that's a bit extreme.

Got screwed by the Chara signing. With Ferhervary and Alexeyev coming up soon made sense to move on.

On the surface it seems weird for a team that thinks they have a chance at a cup to trade away a defenseman right before the playoffs. Usually teams want as much depth at d as possible. Maybe they have another trade in the works.
