Wow Toronto is playing Montreal, how original. Although the last time they played them in a home opener was the 2015-2016 season, so it's been a while since we saw them on opening night.

This thought just occurred to me. Since Toronto played Montreal in the very first game at the Air Canada Centre, maybe the NHL wanted them playing against each other in it's new name which is changing to Scotiabank Arena on July 1, 2018.

Caps fans - before you start complaining about how your banner raising night won't be against the Penguins, keep in mind that for the 5 banner raising ceremonies the Penguins have had, your team was only the visitor ONCE. And if you want to complain about starting off the season on a back-to-back, look at the first 6 weeks of the Penguins' (you know, the "league darlings") schedule from last year.

Edmonton plays their first home game a full week after the rest of the league and over 2 weeks into the season? That seems fair.

I'm guessing it's a ratings factor for NBCSN that the NHL scheduled the Capitals home opener against the Bruins instead of the Penguins.

I love the absolutely random ones. I know they can't get each team against a rival it's just funny. Ottawa kicks off the season against....Chicago!

Every team gets 41 home and 41 away, so how is it not fair?
I can see how it's sh**y from a fans perspective but there's nothing unfair about it.

The "unfair" thing about it from the team standpoint IMO...they obviously start the season with a road trip... If they have a shitty road trip they come home with a potentially already deflated home rink which could easily set the tone for the entire season.

That said, it is amusing how every year people (usually Flames fans) talk about the Oilers getting a "favorable schedule"

Okey, let's win next 2 in row! So we can get the pens for the home opener

Yeah and if they have a great road trip then they come into an excited stadium.
