The farther the team goes in the playoffs the lower the pick

The way it should be I think.......just not quite right for a team to make it to the finals and still wind up pickin 18-19th.

And I don't think it's right to reward chokers.

However you feel that losers should be rewarded, just not chokers? Interesting.

While you're at it, remind why the draft isn't a random lottery each year. How and why did it evolve into the current system?

I think this is right... I think we all can agree that the Cup finalists, regardless of seed, should get the last 2 picks for getting the farthest when it mattered the most.

So much for there being too much change in the NHL...

  8. An 8th seed making the finals and getting a worse pick than they would've in the old system isn't getting rewarded with anything. He's talking about rewarding top seeded teams who get upset in early rounds.

Yeah but... this is invisible change as far as the on ice product. Changing rules and lines or net size do affect the game we watch. Changing how playoff qualifiers are ranked (and thus the 16th pick and onwards) isn't really the same kind of change. With a CBA that's lowering the age of free agency to as low as 25, I'd say that's going to have a much greater impact on teams' futures than this will.

It was never random, it always has rewarded bad teams. It went to a lottery only because of both Pittsburgh and Quebec tanking it to get the first over-all pick. (Lemieux and Lindros).
Personally I think it should be random each and every year, the NHL is socialistic about everything else, why should not the draft also be socialistic? (put 30 balls in a barrel and pull them out one by one)

I do not like it. The regular season is more indicitive of how strong a team is rather than getting hot at the right time and getting to an extra round. I liked the old system as being a fair way to restock teams according to need.

Lots wrong with the above. But just will let those go and say the lottery was about the Daigle draft ironically enough.

the only thing I don't like about this is the fact that it applies to this year's draft and that a lot of draft picks have been traded. The Oilers got the Islander 1rst rounder which was supose to be a 16-20 pick. However, if they win 1 round or 2 the pick could be worth a lot less (24-26)...

Guess us Habs fans are cheering for a first round exit for San Jose now.

any new rule should be made before a season starts, although i would be a fan of this for next year

Exactly. So if a team who wins the Presidents trophy BLOWS their first round match up, their reward is a higher draft pick. Nice job. You had all of the advantages that the playoffs can provide, but since you couldn't do anything with your home ice advantage, we're going to reward your sorry ***** with a higher draft pick, so you can maybe get it right next time.

I guess this is the leagues answer to dealing with the "Doug Weight rule"
    ...Nice work again buttwads.

But it could work to their advantage with the Ducks pick.

First of all, I don't think this rule should be implemented, but since it will be, it should be retroactive starting with a season where no first round draft picks have already been traded.

Missed that part. A choking Presidents trophy winner is not given the same advantages as an 8th seed losing.

I'm pretty sure the Oilers get the Ducks' 2008 1st round pick if the Ducks make the SCF this season.

The main thing with this is that winning a round of the playoffs is MUCH MUCH MUCH more rewarding to a team than getting a slightly better draft pick. You make more money, you give your fans something to cheer about, etc.

    That's the reasoning.

I'd much rather have the Rangers win their first round if they got in as an 8th seed than have a pick at 15th or 16th instead of 19th or 20th. I mean, what the hell is the real difference?

The only teams and fans who will complain about this are the lower seeded playoff team fans.

I mean, God ****ing forbid their team win a round and they have to forfeit a bit in the draft! OH NO!

Thank you for reminding us that the NHL is actually about winning on the ice, not getting the highest draft picks and winning the HF poll. It needs to be said at least once a day. :)
