Not sure if the reaction would be similar, but I'd love the Jets rocking some Thrashers gear.

Highly unlikely that will ever happen. Unlike Carolina which had no major league hockey background before the Whalers relocated there, Winnipeg did have one prior to 1996 and that is what they base their roots from. The Whalers colors and uniforms were always popular even after the team left Hartford which is why Carolina may have decided to wear them on this occasion. The Thrashers uniforms on the other hand could not compare with the Jets Heritage Classic uniforms as seen below:

The Whalers are not your history. The Coyotes understood it, same for the Avs, for the Jets...
Former players Keith Tkachuk (7), Jeremy Roenick (97) and Teppo Numminen (27), along with former Jets players Bobby Hull (9), Thomas Steen (25) and Dale Hawerchuk (10), have been inducted into the Coyotes Ring of Honor. Sounds like they understand it alright.

Colorado Avalanche to consider bringing back Quebec Nordiques jerseys for 25th anniversary - TSN.ca - seems like the Avalanche disagree as well and are quite accepting of their history with the Nordiques.

The Jets are so recent, we'll see what they do in the future, but if they use a 3rd jersey its more likely they use the old Jets jersey again like in the Heritage Classic. The Whalers, Nordiques and old Jets had a strong sense of nostalgia around them as well. The Thrashers don't and may never. Nobody really cared when they moved, unlike the other teams who all had passionate fanbases, albeit smaller ones that couldn't support an NHL franchise at the time.

And they hit on both.

Many teams have been 'gifted' 1st overall picks in the past and royally f***ed them up.

You can't hold it against the Penguins that they used draft picks just like every other team in the league does.

There is a big difference between being gifted a first overall pick and being gifted a generational player. Nobody is holding it against the Pens that they drafted who they drafted, but it is pretty easy to explain a "storied history" compared to another team when the other team has had no generational players fall into their lap. You can however, criticize them for tanking for the Lemieux pick on purpose. That's greasy.
