Eighty-two players in the history of the NHL have reached the coveted 50-goal marker. The first was Maurice Richard in 1944-45 when he netted 50 in 50 games. Though it would be another 16 seasons before that lofty total was reached again, Bobby Hull, Phil Esposito, Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux and Mike Bossy later became household names as frequent visitors to the 50-goal fraternity.

There are also a number of players who surprised the hockey world with an explosive single-season goal output. These fine players had nice careers, and you'll find them on the list below, but more than a few are likely to prompt a double-take.

1. Jacques Richard, 1980-81, Nordiques, 52 goals
Richard is the answer to a trivia question: Of all the players who have scored at least 50 in a season, who has the fewest career goals? Richard scored nearly one-third of his of 160 during the 1980-81 campaign. On only one other occasion did he pot as many as 20.

2. Wayne Babych, 1980-81, Blues, 54 goals
Babych's NHL career started out nicely with a couple of 20-goal seasons prior to his busting loose. But he failed to score 54 in the next three years combined and found his name on the waiver wire.

3. Gary Leeman, 1989-90, Maple Leafs, 51 goals
Leeman's output in his one big season represents more than 25 percent of his career total (199). While he had a couple of 30-goal seasons leading up to his career year, he managed a not-so-grand total of only 48 thereafter.

4. Danny Grant, 1974-75, Red Wings, 50 goals
Though a productive player, Grant's previous high-water mark was 34. Just three seasons earlier, he lit the lamp only 18 times. After beating the Caps' John Adams for his 50th of '74-'75, Grant's career was beset by injuries and poor production. He scored only 34 more goals.

5. Adam Graves, 1993-94, Rangers, 52 goals
After scoring only 23 in his first 217 games, Gravy became offensively productive after being dealt to the Blueshirts by Edmonton. But who could have expected a team-record 52 goals? That's 14 more than the next best season in his career.

6. Guy Chouinard, 1978-79, Flames, 50 goals
A nice center whose first two seasons yielded a combined 45 goals, Chouinard made like General Sherman, marching through opposing defenses to become the only Atlanta Flame to score 50. Alas, he averaged only 22 during his remaining five seasons.

7. Vic Hadfield, 1971-72, Rangers, 50 goals
A late bloomer, the dependable Hadfield was good for 15-20 in each of his previous eight full seasons. Then, at age 31, he erupted for 50. He finished his career strong, but topped out at 31 the rest of the way.

8. Gary Roberts, 1991-92, Flames, 53 goals
While Roberts has more than 400 career goals, his 53 tallies in 1991-92 equaled his total number of points in his previous season.

9. Rick Kehoe, 1980-81, Penguins, 55 goals
Kehoe enjoyed a number of years around the 30-goal plateau. Because of his consistency, Pens fans could not have expected him to establish what was then a team record of 55 -- 22 more than his next best goal-scoring season.

10. Hakan Loob, 1987-88, Flames, 50 goals
Loob was a star in Sweden and a 30-goal scorer in each of his first three NHL seasons. After slumping to 18 in 1986-87, he rebounded with 50. His swan song was 27 the following season, after which he returned to his native land.

50 Goals in 50 Games

Mike Bossy

1980-81: 50 in 50 games (50 in 50)
Many thought it would be impossible to duplicate Maurice Richard’s 50 in 50. Then, in the 1980-81 season, Mike Bossy of the New York Islanders became only the second player to score 50 goals in 50 games. In an 80-game schedule, Mike Bossy scored his 50th goal in his 50th game. He finished the season with 68 goals in 79 games.

Wayne Gretzky

Gretzky was SI's Sportsman of the Year in 1982.1981-82: 61 in 50 games (50 in 39)
1983-84: 61 in 50 games (50 in 42)
1984-85: 53 in 50 games (50 in 49)
While people were still marvelling at what Bossy had just accomplished, Wayne Gretzky of the Edmonton Oilers demolished the "50 in 50" mark. In Gretzky’s 38th game, he scored 4 goals, giving him 45 on the season. It was expected that Gretzky would break the "50 in 50" record, but no one could have predicted what happened next. In his very next game, on December 30, 1981, he scored 5 goals against the Philadelphia Flyers to give him the record of 50 goals in only 39 games. He had 50 goals before anyone else even had 30, and finished with an NHL-record 92 goals on the season.

Gretzky would go on to score 50 goals in 50 games or less two more times in his career. He did it in 1983-84 (finishing with 87 goals) and again in 1984-85 (finishing with 73 goals).

Mario Lemieux
1988-89: 54 in 50 games (50 in 46)
Mario Lemieux of the Pittsburgh Penguins was the next player to score 50 in 50 or less, achieving the feat on the 20th of January, 1989. Mario's 50th goal officially came in game 46, which was Lemieux's 44th game of the season. He finished the season with 85 goals, and at that time, third only to Gretzky’s 92 and 87.

Brett Hull
1990-91: 52 in 50 games (50 in 49)
1991-92: 50 in 50 games (50 in 50)
Brett Hull, son of the famous Bobby Hull, was a gifted goal scorer. He scored 50 goals in 50 games or less twice in his career for the St. Louis Blues. He first did it in the 1990-91 season when Hull scored his 50th goal against rookie goalie Dave Gagnon on January 25th, 1991, in the Blues' 49th game.

His second time -- the most recent season the feat was achieved -- was during the next season (1991-92). On January 28th, 1992, Hull scored his 50th goal in game number 50, in a 3-3 tie in Los Angeles, answering a Gretzky goal.

Cam Neely unofficially had 50 goals in 49 games. The following players scored fifty goals in their fiftieth game or less in a single season, but do not officially qualify for 50-in-50 status because the NHL requires a player to have scored his 50th goal in his team's 50th game or less.

Jari Kurri (1984-85) of the Edmonton Oilers scored his 50th goal in his 50th game of the season, which was his team's 53rd game. He finished with 71 goals for the year.

Alexander Mogilny (1992-93) of the Buffalo Sabres scored his 50th goal in his 46th game of the season, which was his team's 53rd game. He finished with 76 goals for the year.

Mario Lemieux (1992-93 & 1995-96) scored 50 in 50 two more times after his official 50 in 50 in the 1988-89 season. In the 1992-93 season he scored his 50th goal in his 44th game, which was his team's 72nd game. He was plagued by injury that year, and finished with a total of 69 goals in 60 games played, scoring a remarkable 19 goals in his remaining 16 games. In the 1995-96 season he scored his 50th goal in his 50th game (the team's 59th), and finished the season with 69 goals in 70 games.

Cam Neely (1993-94) of the Boston Bruins scored his 50th goal in his 44th game -- faster than any player other than Gretzky and Lemieux -- which was his team's 66th game. He was likewise plagued with injury that year and only played a total of 49 games, failing to score a goal in his remaining five games after reaching fifty.

Near Misses
Bobby Hull Chic 50 goals 52 games1962-63.
Charlie Simmer LA Kings -50 goals 51 games 1980-81.
Mario Lemieux Pitt -50 goals 51 games 1987-88.

Just to go over the 10 players who had the "surprise" 50 goal seasons and why they happened:

Jacques Richard: High-scoring junior star who ran into drug and alcohol problems when he turned. That one big year in Quebec was apparently the result of him actually making an effort to go clean; unfortunately it didn`t last.

Wayne Babych: Was plagued by injuries after his 80-81 season; he may have had more 50 goal seasons otherwise. Give Bernie Federko a little credit as well.

Gary Leeman: Leeman scored 50, but was invisible without the puck. Toronto`s strategy that season was to go all offence/no defence. As a result they ended up at .500. They realized they had to improve defensively to get better, Leeman didn`t fit in with that plan.

Danny Grant: As mentioned, injuries hurt him after that season, as well as losing Marcel Dionne to L.A.

Adam Graves: Any Ranger fans here that can explain this one?

Guy Chounaird: He and Bob MacMillan both had monster starts for Atlanta that season, but slowly went downhill in the second half. Could`ve been due to defences no longer being surprised by them.

Vic Hadfield: With all due respect to Hadfield, he was very fortunate to be on the line he was. Ratelle and Gilbert made the plays happen, Hadfield got to finish them.

Gary Roberts: He didn`t dramatically improve that season, he just finally got a chance. In the years before, Roberts always produced at even-strength, but with Calgary having Nieuwendyk, Fleury, Gilmour, Makarov etc. he rarely got to play on the power-play. That year, they gave him the chance.

Rick Kehoe: Just speculating, but his goal/assist ratio (55/33) indicates he may have been a designated garbageman that year. That season another Pen, Randy Carlyle, blossomed into a Norris winner. Must have killed Toronto fans to see the two ex-Leafs doing so well while the Buds had nothing to show for the two trades.

Hakan Loob: The year after his 50 goal campaign, the Calgary fans and media really gave him a hard time when his numbers dropped the next year. `88-`89 was a magical season for the Flames, yet there was Loob, seemingly the lone underachiever on the team. I wonder if that had anything to do with his decision to go back to Europe.

Nice work, HO, and good article, LL.

Just to expand on some of reckoning's takes:

*Only injuries kept Roberts from having several more 50-goal seasons. Was on pace for 55 goals and 100-plus points in 1992-93 when he suffered a near career-ending blood clot. Scored at nearly a 50-goal clip in 1993-94. Dominant after returning from the neck/shoulder injury in 1995-96. While not as hard-done-by as Neely with injuries (or as dominant as Neely in his prime), injuries did hamper Roberts' career.
*Funny thing about the Leafs in 1989-90: that was their best season in about a decade. They were swept in the first round by St. Louis, but they had a young core (Leeman, Damphousse, Olzyck, Marois and Iafrate) and everyone expected them to get better. They put a little more emphasis on defence at the start of 1990-91, but had a horrible start, traded Olzyck to Winnipeg, and fired the coach. The new coach really clamped down on the creativity. Leeman got hurt, never recovered. As quickly as Leeman went downhill, Daniel Marois plumetted even further.
*Anyone who watched Loob could tell you that his 50-goal season wasn't a surprise. One of the hardest-shooting Swedes ever. Had he stayed in North America, there's no telling the damage he could have done.

Adam Graves never was a real goal scorer: he had a very heavy (but not accurate) wrist shot and never used a slapper. Check his shooting %, I don't think he had a season above 14. As far as his goal explosion, he had something like 21 PPGs in 1994, in large part of having Leetch and Zubov blasting away from the point with him parked in front. But was never a "scorer" really.

Loob and Roberts scoring 50 goals each wasn't a huge surprise, particularly Loob with all his skill. What was likely more surprising from a Cagary POV was Niewendyk scoring 50 goals in his rookie season - I must say I wasn't expecting that, even though I thought he was a great prospect.

IMO bigger surprises than some of those (Hadfield was on the GAG line, Grant got to play with Dionne) was Dennis Maruk exploding for 110 goals in back-to-back seasons in Wash. and Blaine Stoughton netting 56 upon his return to the NHL (another Leaf castoff).

Maruk was a decent scorer with the Seals, but when he popped 50 goals and then a whopping 60 goals when he moved to the Caps, I was quite surprised. Maruk might have been all of 5-5, and he wasn't the fastest guy in the league, but he certainly showed in those two seasons that he could bury the puck. He never scored more than 36 goals in any other season. Stoughton scored 19 and 18 goals in his last two WHA seasons, being traded twice because of his lack of productivity after one big season with Cincinatti. He goes back to the NHL and notches 56 goals on the Whalers, despite never having scored more than 23 goals in his previous three NHL seasons. That one took me and a lot of people by surprise, but he folowed it up with 140 goals over his next three seasons.

Bernie Nicholls scoring 70 goals in 1989 shocked me, because he was his team's second-line center. Yes he got to play with Gretz on the PP, but it's not like they spent the entire season on the power play. His total of 70 was 24 more than he scored in his second-best campaign.

No. He nearly hit 40 goals playing with Gretzky in Gretz's final year in 1998-99. His 52-goal year came in 1993-94, playing on a line with Mark Messier.

Just to point out a few things:
*Craig Simpson was a two-time Stanley Cup champion who also tied for the scoring lead in the 1990 playoffs. Back injuries ended his career far too soon. He was also one of those special players who always saved his best for the post-season. Had he stayed healthy, he would have had more 50-goal seasons.
*Danny Gare actually had two 50-goal seasons. He also likely would have reached the 50 mark the year after his 56-goal campaign if not for injury. Tied for the goal scoring lead the year he had 56.
*Loob may be the most gifted goal scorer to ever come out of Sweden. I think he would have had a couple more 50 goal seasons if he would have stayed in North America.
*Sheppard did score at a 50-goal clip during the lockout year, so his 1993-94 season wasn't a total fluke. A great scorer in tight.
*Richer also had a second 50-goal season. He was wildly inconsistent, but when he was on, he could dominate.
*Hatfield's big year came on the Rangers GAG line (goal-a-game) with HHOFers Ratelle and Gilbert. Outside of that, he was a good, but not a dominant, goal scorer.
*Like Craig Simpson, Redmond had a couple years of high-end play, but his prime was cut short by injury.
*Hodge's big year came with Esposito and Wayne Cashman in Boston.

Gare was actually an outstanding player IMO. He had his 50's while playing on the checking line and I'm pretty sure that he led the league the year he had 56.

They weren't swept in round 1. They won game 4. :teach:
