Ties still get you at 500, with a point apiece.
Not issuing a point each for a game played would actually make a 500 record equivalent lower
Just wins and losses would better reflect what a team actually is.
Take any current record a team has and merge the overtime/shootout losses with regulation losses. Suddenly 8 out of 16 teams in the Eastern Conference are .500 or better, rather than the current 11 out of 16. 7 out of 16 in the Western Conference rather than 11 out of 16.
As it stands, 22 out of 32 teams have a .500 or better points percentage. 21 of those teams are actually at .522 or higher.
Just wins and losses and a games back system reveals what the league should be. Around half the league is at or above .500 and half is at or below. No more nonsense where you have a dozen teams picking up an inflated 100+ points.
