a pretty good read on some of the changes that will be in place next year.
The NHLPA Executive Board has to sign off on those changes. It meets July 16-19 in Pebble Beach, Calif

http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=724046

Among the changes :

Commissioner Bettman also said that the Board of Governors stayed consistent with the various changes to rules and markings on the ice originally approved by the general managers and subsequently approved by the NHL Competition Committee.

Those include changes to procedures for overtime and the shootout, faceoffs after icings, the dimensions of the trapezoid and the hash marks outside the faceoff circles, an amendment to tripping penalty, a more liberal video review policy on pucks off the mesh and distinct kicking motion, and alterations to the rule governing embellishment.

...the new overtime format would require the teams to switch ends for the five-minute extra period, creating the long-change factor that exists in the second period, historically the period that features the most goals. The arena ice crew will also be required to do a dry scrape of the ice before overtime rather than before the shootout.

Goalie Trapezoid -would go from the current 18 feet to 22 feet.

On the OT change:
The object is to increase offense in overtime so more games are decided before the shootout.

"In our game now the way it's played, teams play so hard that one bad change, it can make a difference," said Los Angeles Kings president of business operations Luc Robitaille, a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame. "Players are so good and when there's not a lot of room, suddenly one bad change and it ends up on a 2-on-1 or a 3-on-2. It does make a difference. This certainly will open up a few plays here and there. That long change is always a hard thing for most teams."

If the game goes to a shootout, under the approved changes, coaches would not be required to give a list of shooters but instead could go down the bench and pick players as the shootout progresses. Players would still be allowed to shoot only one time.

NHL had record revenue, should be around 70 million, though I believe the PA has to agree to it at
If its 65 Kings are kinda screwed.

It can't be 65, the revenue before the playoffs was over (not the final tally) was 3.7 billion, according to Chris Botta (NHL) who is quoted in this article and there is also a chart in there that converts the revenue into CAP numbrs. From that chart, 3.70 to 3.72 puts the cap at 70.6 to 71.

I'm hearing reports that the NHLPA is questioning weather or not to use the escalator or not. Which in my opinion is dumb. As a player you should always want more money within the system. And they are also debating on if the new TV deal should be included.
It's sounding like they are more worried about escrow. Which is not exactly smart. Would you rather pay more into escrow or lose a solid vet on your team. Which if they decide to go this route could happen.
He's some new numbers assuming no escalator and an increase in benefits which I heard mentioned as well.
3.7B*.5=1.85B-120M in benefits1.73B/30=57.66M midpoint=66.31 cap.
Not taking the escalator with the increase in benefits of 20M is a almost a 4M difference in the midpoint and a 4M difference in the cap.
That's without adding the new TV deal which they can do as well.

Just heard it's 69 mil. How bad is that going to hurt us?

Not as bad as others. Pretty much just completely shuts out Mitchell.

Chicago won't be able to get a good 2C without gutting their roster, and some others like Boston will look very different next year.

Praise be to DL.

So it sounds like they took the escalator but didn't add any of the new money from the TV deal. That means next year should go up quite a bit just from that alone.

King will get more than $1M, more like $1.5M I'm guessing. He could certainly field offers for more I'm guessing. McNabb I think at minimum has to make $925K (10% raise from 840K if I'm wrong correct me).

Yet another reason the younger Greene was signed to a longer deal with a smaller cap hit instead of Mitchell. Without the cap the Kings probably don't get Mitchell, but the cap also in part ends up costing the Kings Mitchell.

It's going to be interesting to hear the final HRR was at. But the 3.7B works if the benefits went up even more than the 20M projected. But I'm thinking the CDN dollar had a bigger effect than they were saying. And that dropped it to around 3.6B.
But next year with the new TV deal that means it will go up another 5M or so just from it. If all other revenue stays the same. But lets not forget the league has been averaging 7% growth since 2005. So we could look at almost 10M more next year.

Lends more to my opinion that you try to move King. He's going to want to get paid. Kings aren't going to want to pay him too much. Having cost controlled forwards like Andreoff and or Vey as well as cheap contracts like Nolan are going to be key going forward.
