Welcome To The Flyers Board NHL Mega-Mock Draft Reboot, A WHOLE NOTHER PHASE TWENTY-ONE!

YnxELRO.png

I’ll tell you one thing – this sure is a phase. We have some spectacular new categories for you to pore over, consider, whine about, f*** up, misread and mismanage. Exciting times, innit? They are going to have to be, because the bastard who uploaded Heart Signal China: Season Four failed to upload the final two episodes, so I’m stuck here in a REAL frustrating situation.

Also, the c***s at FOX, to a man, can’t actually pronounce “World Cup.” I wouldn’t bring that up in here, but my brain is simmering and my piss is boiling. I just simply cannot.

THE RATIONAL SHIT

  • Team Arcade Game - This is the only arcade game you will have in your cute little kingdom out there. Unless we do Team Arcade Game II. It has to be a game from an actual arcade, if you can believe it. You can’t take anything which has already been taken, if you can also believe that.

  • Team Queen - A real or fictional queen who will … rule? Figuratively or literally, you decide. You can be loopholey about it, but strict NO DUPLICATES rules apply, so it can’t be someone from anything which is taken. If you pick “Queen Bees,” I will cut you in real life, because that is stupid.

  • Team Sorcerer - A real or fictional sorceror who will … ensorcle? I don’t know exactly what they will do – these f***ers are usually tricksters, so they will probably use their magic to make mischief, but you’d like to think they will be on your side most of the time. Strict NO DUPLICATES rules apply, so it can’t be someone from anything which is taken, so don’t try sniping Gandalf from Bernie. There is a twist to this one – NO LOOPHOLES. You have to pick an actual sorceror (or wizard, obviously).

  • Team Children’s Book - As far as rules go, we will use basic common sense. I know what you’re thinking – “Where the f*** are we going to find that in this group of clowns?” We’ll work it out. I’ll probably have to smite a few picks with vetoes as we go along, but we’ll try to be fairly loose. Normal NO DUPLICATES standards for this one.

  • Team Retro Clothing Item - I dread the choice of hat that DancingPanther is going to choose for this one, but what can you do? The best way to handle this one is probably to find a picture of what you want and post that with a name which will fit in the boxes (for once). I think the only duplicates which this could f*** with are the “Team Fashion” choices, so don’t duplicate anyone’s choice in there.

  • Team Ancient Civilization - This one will be fun because we will get a nice write-up from Biff that is interesting to read. The civilization has to be from real life, so nothing fictional. Regular NO DUPLICATES rules apply, so don’t choose a civilization which has been explicitly and wholly chosen before. I don’t think there has been one, but check to be sure.

  • Team Element - This is the wrong thing for me to speculate on – I am horrific at science – but you should choose an element from the … table of elements? Is that what it’s called, that thing with the Scrabble squares that scientists use in their … f***ing … experiments? Pick one of those. NO LOOPHOLES, so you can’t be cheeky and say “I am picking the element of surprise.”

  • Team Golf Course/Club - Some of us have courses that we go to and play at regularly. Some of us know of famous courses we would like to bring with us. Some of us have no knowledge or feelings about golf whatsoever. Google is your friend. Just do what we always do – think about some connection to your team #Lore and find one. If any of you pick “5 Iron” etc. for this, I will cut you in real life to the point where you are dehydrated from blood loss.

  • Team Talk Show Host - This is a talk show host, if you can believe it. Don’t pick anyone who has been picked for something else. We’ll define “Talk Show” extremely loosely. I hesitate to say that, because of Defect I and Defect II, but that’s the way she goes.

  • Team Music Video - This one is pretty f***ing great, if you think about it. There are so many great videos out there – some for the video element, some for the music element, a lot for both. Don’t worry about duplicates for this one – it gets a little tedious trying to always protect everything, even though it’s important, but for this one we are just focusing on the videos.

  • Team Cartoonist - This one, on the other hand, is strict as f*** with duplicates, and I’ll tell you why – if any of you jokers took Bill Watterson or Berkley Breathed, I’d probably throw myself in front of a train. So I’m calling a selfish audible in exchange for having to type all this shit up all the time. So CATEGORY 6 NO DUPLICATES standards apply – that means you can’t pick a cartoonist involved in anything which has been picked before. Unless you want to just give me those two and pick whatever you want – you can let me know. Either way, here is the good news – you don’t have to just pick a comic strip artist - you can pick the creator of an anime series or movie. So you find a series or movie you love, go to the Wiki page and look up the creator/director. Two notes: Hayao Miyazaki is off limits to everyone except Magua, and Walt Disney is off limits to everyone except Cannon. Because it would obviously be very stupid for them to be with anyone else, just like my two would be ridiculous anywhere else.

  • Dealer's Choice III - Don’t choose something ridiculous like “The Moon” or “Oxygen” or “Water” or “The Internet.” If you have chosen one of these things in the past, don’t take offense at me calling them “ridiculous” – you made a ridiculous choice and shouldn’t do that again – it’s not the end of the world (yet). Think of the categories we have had and choose something that is approximately the “size” of something that could fit into one of them, even if there hasn’t yet been a category for your thing. NO DUPLICATES!

1Beu0Fi.png

Remember: “Chaos” is not the same thing as “Havoc.” Engage in the former, not the latter. We have a whole ton of stuff left over for future phases, so don’t worry if categories you wanted aren’t in here - I will champion them later with the boss.

For the first round, we will give everyone 12 hours to get revved up again - for all the succeeding rounds, it will be six hours. The daily clock starts at 8 a.m. and ends at 10 p.m., all times Eastern. This is a MONGOOSE DRAFT, which is the same functionally as a snake draft, but isn’t named after the turboc*** of the animal world.

Don't forget to tag the next person in your pick post AND send a PM.

THE ROMAN f***ING STATE

Roman_Empire_Trajan_117AD.png

Let's go ahead and date this from the beginning to the Republic to the demise of the final successor state, so 509 BC to 1461 when Trebizond was knocked out.

Do I really need to summarize the Roman Empire? Everyone knows it. They spoke Latin, a delightfully weird language where word order doesn't strictly matter. They were descended from [REDACTED] and embraced the [REDACTED] religious tradition as the dominant theology, but they added their own twists and happily/eagerly glommed every deity they encountered into their pantheon. Oh, also, they built a military that was a relentless meat-grinder of conquest and engineering.

Let's try to cover things most people don't know.

Their relentless meat-grinder military isn't what conquered the entire empire up there. In fact, most of it wasn't conquered. The Romans loved efficiency and they realized that the threat of a terrifying military was more effective than actually using it. Most of that territory was added via diplomacy. Neighboring tribes/kingdoms/states would ask for protection. One of their neighbors would get stomped on in defense. Others in the region would jump on board, it being better to be under Roman protection and sacrifice dreams of stabbing your neighbors than it was to get stabbed by the Meat-Grinder. They'd extract concessions and control as the cost of protection until they'd assumed political authority. This is why the Roman system was so resilient and there really weren't many rebellions; everyone in the thing had chosen to be in there, and for the most part it was a really beneficial arrangement. That's a thing Hannibal didn't understand when he tried to split "subjected" states in Italy away from Rome, most of them recognized a good thing and weren't interested. And this was also the root of their greatest strength: basically limitless manpower. Providing soldiers was one of the staples of being under Roman protection, which was also a route to citizenship which was highly desired. Most city-states of the era didn't really recruit from conquered cities, or didn't do so effectively, so their manpower base was typically limited to their main city and original area, so about 50-60,000 men for a powerful city-state. Rome's estimated military manpower base by 230 BC was about 800,000 men.

So that sets up probably their greatest strength: adapatability. Despite being tradition obsessed conservatives, they had no serious problems adapting to situations. Their huge manpower base is likely what afforded them this luxury. Trying something and having it fail wasn't ever crippling. They could change tactics until they found what worked, which they basically always did right up through the final siege of Constantinople. Their adaptability and grudging but usually inevitable tolerance of change and different things also reinforced their ability to keep a wide range of peoples and culture together until they homogenized. Until Christianity was made the official religion of the Empire. That did change things, and kinda slaughtered tolerance and was one of many major reasons behind the collapse of the West, which nobody at all wanted to have happen but kinda just did because it became unworkable as the system stopped being adaptable and people rejected the leaders who could have kept it going when they'd have been accepted in the past. The Eastern half remained adaptable, even while hardening attitudes along religious lines.

Umm what else. Oh, yeah, they had no set system of imperial succession once they shifted to the imperial model. They never did. The oldest son wasn't necessarily automatically the heir, or seen as such, even if power had been shifted to him. There were a lot of civil wars because of this, but aside from a messy 2nd century it mostly worked, and eventually those wars were really brief.

Ketchup is a direct descendent of garum, the condiment heavily used throughout the empire. It spread along trade routes to China, where it became the fish sauce known as catsup, and eventually was recreated by immigrants in the US who missed their favorite fluid. Woroscoeocoeootocotoshahshsshire sauce is also a descendent.

Trade networks were global. There's almost no surviving goods from the East in the old Roman empire, because most of what was traded was perishable like silk or spices. The Romans were great at glasswork and the empire was chock full of silver and gold, which the Far East lacked, so the main evidence of this trade is Roman coins, which have been found as far away as Japan. And glasswork. Chinese porcelain may be descended from Roman works.

One more important thing: They had a saying for people who were pooping. "Cacator Cave Malum," which translates to "Shitter, watch out for The Evil." "The Evil" being dysentery. They had no idea what caused dysentery. All they knew was sometimes you'd start pooping and wouldn't stop until you died. So that was a way of saying "Hey good luck, hope The Evil doesn't shit you to death!"

Vomitoriums as you know them weren't real. Never existed.

Aurelian is the greatest emperor you've never heard of. So is Basil II The Bulgar Slayer, who would have been mega pissed at being called that.

Roman graffiti is one of the greatest examples of humans still being human through time. You get stuff like "For a good time, go visit Lucretia," or early forms of Yelp reviews carved on the side of fast food businesses.

Oh! They had fast food. Efficient city living, makes sense for a highly urban society.

Lead in pipes wasn't the problem everyone makes it out to be. Lead elsewhere, yeah. Sure. Romans were super good at plumbing.

Mehmet II and Enrico Dandalo are soyboys.

I can write way too much about this, so this ends my addled listing of random thoughts. I have taken The Roman State rather than the Empire or Republic for very good reasons: The capital quickly became wherever the leader was, rather than one set place, which separates this pick from physical locations that may otherwise be picked. And divisions between Republic/Empire aren't clean at all, it was a generations-long shift so in reality it was the same state, just shifting from one method of rule to another.

What

What did you do
Nothing. I hadn’t even used it in a few days.

Turned in on, entered some info on an excel spreadsheet and watched a YouTube video. Noticed it was really slow and kept freezing.

Turned it off, turned it on the next day, even worse. Froze. Turned it on, tried to do some possible fixes but it froze in the middle of them.

Turned it off, turned it back on and I couldn’t even open the task manager before it froze.

Turned it off, turned it back on, and it froze when it put in my password.

So I gave up and have someone looking at it tomorrow.

Put in a blank CD-RW
I’m not touching anything.
