Pretty neat seeing three Sharks nominated for the Selke. It's a real testament to our centre depth, especially considering we have Marleau and Hertl on top of that.

You guys know I am against the Lady Bling trophy. What it really points out is the player who has not played at 100% of effort throughout the year.

In this NHL, there is no way a player giving it full effort can go with just two minutes of penalties. There will more questionable or bad penalties by the referees for someone going full effort and playing two-way fully. Sure enough, the top player on everyone's list has a -1 for +/- for the full season.

O'Reilly would have had a neutral or positive +/- plus more goals than 49th in the league if he played all out and not worried about PIMs. He would have been better off, imo.

Marleau is 11th in the league for goals with 18 PIMs, and a neutral +/-. He bests O'Reilly's assists although O'Reilly is a center. Not that I am arguing that Marleau gets the Lady Bling as I hope that dam trophy does not land on the Sharks.

This should be the trophy no player wants, and the NHL should retire it for good.

Thornton ahead of marleau in selke voting :P

I actually think Jumbo is the better defensive player. The difference between the two is that Jumbo blows coverage occasionally due to laziness, while Marleau does simply because he lacks the hockey IQ of other Selke candidates. Still, it's a lot easier to be a two-way winger than it is to be a two-way center (just ask Sheppard), and keeping Marleau on the wing helps mask his inability to anticipate and read plays the way Thornton (and Couture and Pavelski) are able to in the neutral and defensive zones. With their overall defensive game being relatively equal, i give the nod to JT due to his defensive value in the face-off circle and work along the boards, both of which are night and day ahead of Marleau and very important in the D zone.
