All Encompassing 2013-2014 NHL Awards Thread (Merged)

there's already a thread congratulating Sid on winning the Art Ross but i think we need a thread to discuss the other potential awards and honors he or others might win.

i always find voting shares to be interesting, so i'll post if i find that some writers have thrown Nisky or Maatta third, fourth, fifth, ect place votes.

HART

Bob McKenzie polled 16 GMs. GMsof course don't have Hart Trophy votes, but most see these results as being indicative of how the voting will play out.

Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie Apr 9
Hart: Crosby unanimous, 16 for 16. ANA's Getzlaf clear runner up, PHI's Giroux 3rd. No one else close tho Pavelski, Rask, Chara mentioned.

https://twitter.com/TSNBobMcKenzie/status/454019666709467136

Elliott Friedman has Crosby as the runner-up to the Hart.

Crosby had a marvelous year. He absolutely carried the Penguins to the second seed in the Eastern Conference despite 500 man-games lost to injury. People question everything about Pittsburgh going into the playoffs -- their depth, their goaltending, their commitment to defence -- but no one questions him.

http://www.cbc.ca/sports-content/hockey/opinion/2014/04/30-thoughts-ryan-getzlaf-for-mvp.html

Mark Spector, senior columnist for Sportsnet.ca, thought that "'Sid the Kid' schooled everyone this year"

That Sid Crosby has won just one Hart Trophy while being the consensus “Best Player in the Game” for how many years now is perplexing. Well, it will be less so when he wins his second Hart in June.... And what about that tricky wording of the award—“the player adjudged to be the most valuable to his team?” He satisfies that as well. In a season that saw massive injuries throughout Pittsburgh’s lineup, the Penguins still walked away with the Metropolitan Division thanks to Crosby’s leadership and production.

Crosby an easy pick for Hart, but NHL awards ballot tricky after that

Nick Cotsonika, Yahoo Sports

Whichever definition you use – the liberal “best player” or the literal “most valuable to his team” – Crosby should win the Hart hands down. The Penguins led the NHL in man-games lost to injury. But their captain stayed healthy for a full season for the first time since 2009-10, and he carried the team to the second-best record in the Eastern Conference.

Ross McKeon leans on plus/minus and blocked shots to justify his vote for Getzlaf

I believe in addition to his offensive production Getzlaf had an outstanding season defensively (plus-28 to Crosby’s plus-18) and ranked second among forwards with 87 blocked shots (Crosby was 193rd with 28). Getzlaf produced more game-winning goals, he led his team to a higher finish in the overall standings and he accomplished all this against much better competition in the Western Conference than Crosby faced in the East.

Joe Haggerty of Comcast SportsNet New England

1) Sidney Crosby – This might have been the easiest vote of all. His 104 points were 17 more than anybody else, and he did while holding together an injury-plagued Penguins team long enough to run away with the Metro Division. Hard to envision Pittsburgh getting anywhere close to that without him.’

Justin Bourne, The Score

In 2013-14 Sidney Crosby was simply the league’s most valuable asset. His 104 points were 17 greater than the next closest player, giving Sid the largest statistical margin of victory since Jaromir Jagr in 1998-99 (20, over Teemu Selanne). While points aren’t everything, I don’t feel like much explanation is needed here.

5. Matt Niskanen, Pittsburgh

CALDER

Elliott Friedman gave Maatta a second or third place vote (i can't actually figure out how he ranked Maatta and Palat based on this write-up)

Only Crosby, Matt Niskanen, Brooks Orpik and Chris Kunitz played more than the 19-year-old Maatta on a decimated roster. He didn't look out of place.

http://www.cbc.ca/sports-content/hockey/opinion/2014/04/30-thoughts-ryan-getzlaf-for-mvp.html

Mark Lazerus gives Maatta a fifth-place vote.

Both Maatta and Niskanen played exceptionally well for about 2/3's of the season. The latter part they slipped a bit. It's crucial both play at to their abilities starting Tomorrow. Not surprised either are receiving league wide recognition. That said Keith AND Mckinnon look to be unanimous choices.

Blows my mind that Ryan Suter isn't in the conversation for the Norris. He logged well over 29 minutes per game which is 2 more than the next closest person (Erik Karlsson) and was a 40 point player on a playoff team.

Niskanen was good but no that good. Surprised Maatta isn't getting more hype. His limited ice time is hurting him despite the fact the guys ahead of him played like garbage.

So Ross McKeon went on and ruined Crosby's chances for a sweep of the 1st place votes, eh? Can't say I find anything to agree on his reasoning either. And he even had Perry as his 4th place vote, yet he mentioned Malkin as something that's against Crosby's importance to the Pens but apparently having Perry as a sidekick doesn't hurt Getzlaf's importance :shakehead

Edit. Oh Friedman too I see.

I am starting to think Jaded is right...it seems some writers will do their best to give someone else the Hart over Crosby. I mean, seriously, blocked shots & +/-?

Yeah that's some of the most ridiculous logic against Crosby I've heard so far. I mean the 17 more points he had than Getzlaf is meaningless. It's those really important stats like blocked shots that matters here.

Edit: I just looked and Getzlaf finished with 5 more points than Perry and 12 less goals than him. Why can Geno be used against Sid (even when Geno didn't play for 25% of the season) but Perry isn't used against Getzlaf?

You really believe that he will be the only one to not have Crosby first on his ballot?

Crosby likely still takes this, though it wouldn't shock me if he lost again given the morons who vote on this. But it will be far from unanimous. At least a quarter or a third will vote for someone else. Either because they hate Crosby (can you imagine a single voter in Philly giving him even a third place vote? Or a number of other cities), or more because they think that they are being 'hockey smart' by 'looking beneath the surface' to justify their cool non-Crosby vote. Like using plus minus. Ooooh, look how cool and smartalicious I am!

I always find it funny how people point to how player A is better at defense than another. If their point totals are close, yeah i guess you could say he had a better season. but Crosby had SEVENTEEN more points than Getzlaf. are you telling me Getzlaf's better defense was worth 17 extra points, in addition to Crosby's D(because you know he does things on the ice sometimes besides score points too)?

I bet Datsyuk was probably more valuable than Crosby too. his defense is so great. he probably saved 67 more goals than Crosby did! :sarcasm:

David Pollak's (Sharks writer) votes:

HART TROPHY
1. Sidney Crosby, Pittsburgh Penguins
2. Claude Giroux, Philadelphia Flyers
3. Semyon Varlamov, Colorado Avalanche
4. Gustav Nyquist, Detroit Red Wings
5. Joe Pavelski, San Jose Sharks
http://blogs.mercurynews.com/sharks...voting-as-well-as-the-players-he-penciled-in/

That Nyquist vote is ridiculous. Yes, he was amazing and had a sensational year. Yet, he played less % of the season than Crosby last year when Sid was dominating the league. It cost Sid the Hart so no way can anyone justify a single vote for to Nyquist for Hart Trophy this season.

Pavelski is another great player who had a great season but seems like a homer pick to me. Shouldn't be there when there's no Getzlaf.

That right there is why the awards are a joke. I enjoy it for the show and keep it at that.

We won't probably get much if any more votes published before the Award show as apparently NHL has asked the writers to hold off any further voting info before the show. But we already got a pretty clear idea that Sid will win this one handsomely - as he should.

24 first place votes and 2 second place votes are the results so far.

For as bad as our beat writers are, they have nothing on the Colorado guys. Bar none the worst in the industry, and I'm talking across all four sports.

Aside from that, in the end it won't matter. Nobody is ever going to win a Hart Trophy unanimously anymore...it doesn't need to be your biggest rival voting against your guy, it's going to be some writer on the other side of the continent that you never see that thinks their guy is underrated and deserves recognition. Denver media is the best at simultaneously picking a player apart and building them up, so whatever their performance is they can be correct. Sid could have a 200 point season in this modern NHL and some idiot writer will vote for his 80 point left winger because 'well we wouldn't have made the playoffs without him'. Unanimous is for Calders, not Harts...and that's just one reason why the Hart is losing it's prestige.

I actually made a poll for that.

http://hfboards.mandatory.com/showthread.php?t=1644107

Dater tied with Damien Cox, though I still say Simmons is worse than either of them. Colorado's other beat writers (which I did not include) were responsible for several of the "other" responses, but so were some other Toronto writers/columnists.

Overall, the Toronto media's probably the worst, imo, followed by Colorado, then Ottawa.

As far as all four sports, I'd agree with the guy who nominated Stephen A Smith.

Edit: I was going to do a "best beat writer" poll, but there's no real reason to have any name in such a poll other than Michael Russo, though I do like Erik Erlundsson too. And the Columbus guys aren't that bad. Michael Arace and the other guy, whatshisname.

Edit: What the Hell. Making one. http://hfboards.mandatory.com/showthread.php?t=1650681
