Defensive Awareness/Stickchecking for all 50-21 forwards revealed so far:

Larkin: 88/89
Aho: 88/89
Huberdeau: 89/89
Eichel: 89/89
Kessel: 87/86
Toews: 93/93
Point: 89/89
Marner: 90/90
Panarin: 88/89
Draisaitl: 89/89
Wheeler: 90/90
Scheifele: 89/88
Giroux: 88/88
Kopitar: 92/90
O'Reilly: 93/93
Tarasenko: 88/89
Hall: 88/88
Seguin: 87/87
Pastrnak: 89/88
Gaudreau: 86/90
Rantanen: 89/91
Tavares: 90/90
Marchand: 90/89
Matthews: 89/90
Barkov: 93/93
Bergeron: 94/95
Stamkos: 90/88
Malkin: 88/89

It's pretty obvious they put no effort into this, or at least use defensive stats to stabilize the ratings in some way. Outside of the Selke-winning guys and Kessel/Seguin, everybody falls between 88-90. Kessel I get for making lower but still, what's the point if it's only by 1, maybe 2 attribute points from the obvious norm of 88-90. And then if you've won a Selke you get to jump a couple points up to 92/93.

Edit: added from the 20-11 players.

ITs just laziness... they don’t wanna put actual thought or effort into the ratings so this is what we get.

This is what I've been saying. For anyone complaining about players overalls, this right here is the real issue. Patrick Kane will probably have 90 defensive awarness or something just to pad his overall to the 91 he's supposed to have. If his defensive awarness was something more realistic, such as 84, his overall would basically drop to 88 and he'd be no better than Toews. Too much worth is put into defensive awarness and stick checking and too little is put into puck skills.

With the way things are now, there's only a handful of players who should realistically be 90+ overall. But EA will pad Nicklas Backstrom's speed to 90, Erik Karlsson's defensive awareness to 92 etc just so they can have 50 players be 90+ overall.

What sucks about this, is that guys like Johnny Gaudreau and Phil Kessel will be some of your best PK options if you play franchise mode. The current rating system needs and overhaul.

The funny thing is it would balance itself out if you gave guys like Kessel accurate shooting stats or Gaudreau amazing hands and agility or whatever... 2 way guys often get a big bump offensively (like Backstrom for skating) and the game makes it seem like everyone can shoot/pass/skate/etc. the same.

Really there should be third liners with stats in the 90s and stats in the low 70s all the time.

But instead its a balancing act all across the board, just rate on there overall rather than accurately.

I would love it if they did something like this. it would actually fit really well with the new feature on how to properly build and balance your lines as well

I've tried editing players with no overall number in mind. It's good for gameplay, but the problem occures in franchise mode (my favourite) when players don't demand the contracts they are worth. Especially some fringe guys, who because they are now 76 overall instead of 77, will settle for a 2-way deal though they are established regulars in the NHL.

So now I have a more hybrid approach. I might have a targeted overall in mind, but if I feel like the attributes become too skewed in one direction or another, I will settle for a different overall. Typically this happens with tiny forwards who are average defensively (Gaudreau) or with offensive minded defensemen (Karlsson).

I did a test just now on NHL 19, editing and comparing some players to EAäs NHL 20 ratings. Let me know what you think and be honest :)

Because every star player is no longer elite defensively, there won't be many skaters with an overall rating of 90 and higher. Crosby, McDavid, MacKinnon and Barkov for sure. Maybe Kane, Ovechkin and Malkin. Possibly Hedman and Doughty on defence due to more strenght/defensive awarness in comparison to Karlsson.

We started with 2 85s in NHL 19 (Horvat Boeser) added 2 more as season went on (Pettersson Markstrom) although you are correct about NHL 18 and 17 I think
85 is not greater than 85
