The NHL has a bigger problem with the NHLOA in the immediate future.

This past season saw the NHL punish 6 referees for calls made in the playoffs culminating with Steve Kozari and Kelly Sutherland losing their Game 7 assignment in the SCF because of noncalls in Game 5.

The NFL gets in trouble in the playoffs when they break the crews up from the regular season as does MLB.

Gambling is going to be the revenue generator in the next decade - several NHL teams plan to have sportsbooks IN THE ARENA in the next 2 years.

Officials are the weakest link because even the highest paid official does not come close to making the minimum salary of a player.

This is not a new concern. Even before legalization we know there was a large underground & offshore market for sport gambling. If anything legalization should help regulate and better implement tracking and analysis of irregular betting. Perhaps additional tools will be available to increase integrity. This said I expect underground will still remain as they are more likely to offer better odds and be used for money laundering.

NBA already had an official betting scandal back in 2007.

The opportunity costs for football officials are too great to go to a full time program.

It’s tough enough to get crews to work High School games, forcing a college guy to give up his straight job for a “chance” to go pro and destroy his career path just isn’t gonna happen unless they’re making something in the high 6 figures.
