Where are you getting buyout or retaining from
Because Maanta is under 26 the buyout rules are different(and yes I thought he was older too) The problem is he turns 26 on 08-22 so no is clear on what the rules will be. Before Covid he could be bought out at below price. Now who knows?

A couple of proposals between New Jersey and Chicago:

1.
To NJ: Chicago’s 2020 1st Round Pick, Olli Maatta, Zack Smith
To CHI: Vancouver’s 2020 conditional 1st Round Pick

This assumes Chicago loses the play in and doesn’t win the lottery.

Why for CHI: Frees up cap space in order to sign Strome, Kubalik and a no.1 goalie next season. If Vancouver’s pick remains projected to be pick 17, then the slide down the draft in the first round is only 8 picks.

Why for NJ: Uses their available cap space to upgrade Vancouver’s pick to another top 10 selection, in the upcoming draft. The top 12 of this draft is special and it would be appealing for NJ to potentially walk away with three top 10 /11 picks (depending on where the Arizona pick ends up).

So above scenario 75% pick 10 12.5% pick 9 and if pick 1 CHI ain't trading.

If Devils if Sanderson or one of the other top 8 is there at 10 I see why. If best player available is Quinn I think would pass.

If top 8 and Sanderson went, the hawks need a young goalie so bad I think you just take Askarov.

No to either proposal.

Hawks have a half dozen options to get under the cap. It's not like Maatta is a bad player or Smith is signed for more than one more season. The Hawks need to do what they can to try to get potential game breaking talents; it's hard enough to do that at 10th overall, let alone 7 or so spots lower.

And Nylander is a better player than Jesper Boqvist. Sure, Nylander didn't do much last season in the NHL and he hasn't done much in the AHL, but neither has Boqvist. At least Nylander has more tools and a better chance to turnout.

2.
To NJ: Alex Nylander
To CHI: Jesper Boqvist

Why for CHI: Reunite Jesper with his brother Adam. Jesper also has top 6 forward potential like Alex Nylander.

Why for NJ: Reunite Alex with his former Mississauga super buddies team mates Mikey McLeod and Nate Bastian. They had excellent chemistry in juniors on the same line and NJ wants to see if they can replicate that in NHL.
No way would I trade Boqvist....he can be a special player....Devils stay course and go young and stay young
