This is my hand[-drawn pencil artwork titled "Carry Me Home". It took me over 220 hours to draw. Through this artwork, I intended to capture the complete history of the Colorado Avalanche (including their years as the Quebec Nordiques). There are many references to Avalanche fan culture and history throughout the piece.
Fans are walking to Colisée de Quebec (1972-1995) on the far left, McNichols Sports Arena (1995-1999) on the near left and Ball Arena (1999-Present) on the right.
Ghosted over the merged arenas are eight legendary players from their 8 years in the WHA and 43 years in the NHL. From left to right: Michel Goulet, Peter Stastny, Joe Sakic, Petr Forsberg, Patrick Roy, Milan Hejduk, Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar. Fan jersey numbers represent many more legends and include all incarnations of the Nordiques and Avalanche jerseys.
The young fan in the center wearing MacKinnon's #29 carries an "ALL THE SMALL THINGS" sign as the song of the same title, by Blink 182, has become a big part of Avs' culture. DJ Triple T will play the song during a break in the last few minutes of the third period if the Avalanche appear to have solidified the win and fans will continue to sing all of the lyrics even after the music has been stopped and play has resumed.
Badaboum, the Nordiques mascot welcomes fans on the left, while Howler, the Avs' first mascot, and Bernie, their current mascot, welcome fans on the right.
Next to Bernie, the Pepsi Rock pays homage to the original name of the Ball Arena, "Pepsi Center", which many hardcore fans still use to this day.
Two fans are carrying white pom poms, which have become a playoff tradition at Ball Arena. Fans wave the pom poms during playoff games, creating an effect resembling an avalanche.
A fan is wearing a hoodie with the words "MISSION 16W ACCOMPLISHED" and an image of Ray Bourque hoisting the Stanley Cup. This pays homage to the Av's motto on route to their 2001 Stanley Cup as well as the memorable moment the legendary Ray Bourque won his first and only Stanley Cup in his very last game in the NHL.
