All Picks/Prospects

Team Needs:

2nd line center
Defensive Defensemen
Energy line guys
Starting goaltender

AHL/Prospects:

1. Evgeny Kuznetsov(RW)- 1st round selection(26th overall) in 2010

Talent Analysis- Kuznetsov displays a mixture of strength and skill along with the exuberance of other young Russian players such as Evgeny Malkin. His game is still in its early stages of development, and he has the expected shortcomings when it comes to defending consistently and tactical play. What sets him apart from other players his age is his flawless skating, stick handling and passing and pass receiving skills along with a fearless desire - particularly along the boards - to control the puck and create scoring opportunities.

Potential- Top 6 foward

2. Mathieu Perreault(C)- 6th round selection(177th overall) in 2006.

Talent Analysis- Perreault is a small but quick, shifty skater who is a slick playmaker. He has great vision and a keen awareness of his teammates. He is equally adept at releasing a quick shot or making a tape-to-tape pass to an open teammate to create scoring chances. He is a strong centerman and a very good face-off man despite his diminutive size. He has proven to be a clutch, big-game player who produces constant offensive pressure while taking care of his own end. While his lack of size may always be an issue, there is no questioning Perreault’s talent.

Potential- 2nd line center

3. Dmitri Orlov(D)- 2nd round selection(55th overall) in 2009.

Talent Analysis- Orlov is a talented, smooth skating offensive defenseman who prefers to press the attack and create scoring opportunities at all times. His freelancing at times creates openings for the opposition, but Orlov is a constant threat. He is a decent sized player with a strong core but does not play an overly physical game. His strong suit is his creativity and high skill level which allows him to execute the complex plays he conceives. His shooting is accurate if not powerful and he is also adept at finding teammates with quick passes.

Potential- Top 4 Defensemen & PP Quarterback

4. Cody Eakin(C)- 3rd round selection(85th overall) in 2009.

Talent Analysis- Eakin isn’t a big guy and relies on his terrific speed and agility as his two greatest assets for success. He’s a solid two-way player that is very useful as a penalty killer, but is sometimes inconsistent in his defensive play. He’s an aggressive forechecker and will play the body although he’s not known as a punishing hitter. He’s creative and will attack defenders one-on-one but can also distribute the puck and uses his teammates well. Eakin doesn’t panic with the puck and rarely forces passes when under pressure. He is an above shooter and passer and is thus a constant offensive threat. Eakin is a natural centerman but is able to play winger, too. His competitiveness makes him popular with coaches, fans and teammates.

Potential- 2nd/3rd line center.

5. Francois Bouchard(RW)- 2nd round selection(35th overall) in 2006.

Talent Analysis- Bouchard is an adept playmaker, with a quick release and great vision in the offensive zone. He is an excellent shooter, with a great release and a hard shot, and a strong nose for the net. Bouchard is agile and quick but not particularly fast. Bouchard's production has at times been inconsistent and his ability to compete in high pressure situations has been questioned in the past - though he seemed to dispel some of those concerns in the AHL playoffs in 2000-10. Other issues from his junior career revolving around his work ethic and discipline have also shown some progress. Bouchard has loads of stick handling talent, creative moves and is a slick passer, but he lacks strength at times and can be pushed off the puck too easily. To his credit, he's improved both his strength and his combative play since his junior days. He can play a feisty game and battle when it is necessary, but should avoid undisciplined penalties.

Potential- 2nd line forward(Ceiling) or bottom 6 forward.

6. Dmitri Kugryshev(RW)- 2nd round selection(58th overall) in 2008.

Talent Analysis- Kugryshev has been a consistent scorer since his early days of youth hockey in Russia. He is a solid winger who is effective along the boards. He does not have blazing speed, but is quick to change direction and is strong on his skates. He is not overly aggressive but does not shy away from the physical game and is strong enough to hold his own. He plays with strength and balance to win small area battles and work along the walls. Kugryshev plays a two-way game and works on the back check to regain possession. He is clever in the neutral zone and quick to generate the attack off the transition. He is not overly creative but relies on sound, crisp passes to generate offense. He has a quick release and an accurate shot though it's not overly powerful.

Potential- Top 6 two way forward.

7. Stanislav Galiev(C)- 3rd round selection(86th overall) in 2010.

Talent Analysis- A talented puck handler, Galiev has a knack for finding the open man to set up a scoring opportunity. Elusive along the boards, the 18-year-old is hard to knock off the puck, thanks in part to his wide stance, although he would benefit from getting stronger. Already familiar with the demands of the North American game, Galiev has shown willingness for both the physical side of the game as well as helping out in his own zone, but he still needs to improve in both facets.

Potential- 2nd line/3rd line center.

8. Braden Holtby(G): 4th round selection(93rd overall) in 2008.

Talent Analysis- Holtby has the prototypical size that scouts look for in a goalie and is a sound technical goalie that plays a butterfly style. His positioning and top of the net awareness are sometimes an issue as he's been beaten by high shots at times. His side-to-side quickness compares well with probable Washington starter Semyon Varlamov and he controls rebounds well. He has an above average glove hand. Holtby has the stamina and conditioning level to handle a big workload - he was one of the busiest goalies in terms of shots and minutes played during his junior career. As is typical of many young goalies, he can be inconsistent at times. In terms of intangibles, whether it is just a matter of having been in the right place on strong teams or that he elevates the play of the team around him, Holtby has won a lot of games the past two seasons.

Potential- NHL Starter(Ceiling) or AHL Starter.

9. Jay Beagle(C)- Signed as a free agent in 2008.(2003 Draft Eligible)

Talent Analysis- eagle is a big, physical, energy player who does all the little things right. He is a hard-working center whose legs never stop moving, an attribute that has earned him some spot duty with the Capitals. Beagle's finishing abilities and overall scoring touch are inconsistent thus far. Under-sized during his junior days, when he was a big scorer in the Alberta Junior Hockey League, Beagle has grown several inches since and has adapted his game well to take advantage of that size.

Potential- Energy forward, bottom 6.

10. Phillipp Grubauer(G)- 4th round selection(112th overall) in 2010.

Talent Analysis- Grubauer is a big, technically sound, calm goaltender. His strength is his ability to fill the net and utilize his quick legs to make seemingly impossible saves while deflecting pucks out of harm's way. Grubauer is also good at catching the puck with his glove. Having played at a lower level of competition in his native Germany, and seeing limited ice time in his first season with Belleville, he is still learning to deal with the more sophisticated scorers and higher quality shooters in North America. He can sometimes be deked out of position or beaten by accurate shots - particularly in the top of the net.

Potential- NHL Starter

11. Anton Gustafsson(C)- 1st round selection(21st overall) in 2008.

Talent Analysis- Gustafsson is a highly-skilled, two-way center with good size who likes to play the body - sometimes to his own peril as injuries have slowed his development. Gustafsson is still maturing physically but has good hockey sense and is a responsible defender. He works to distribute the puck and looks to create opportunities for his teammates. His shot is not particularly strong but it is accurate and he has a quick release that sometimes surprises opposing goalies. He can be very dangerous and tough to play one-on-one at full speed but does not have great quickness and acceleration. Defensively, he is workmen-like and rarely takes unnecessary risks. He relies on smart decisions and simple plays.

Potential- Effective 2nd/3rd line center.

12. Patrick Wey(D)- 4th round selection(115th overall) in 2009.

Talent Analysis- Wey is a puck-moving defenseman whose game is predicated on getting up the ice and distributing the puck to make plays. He has the ideal height and speed to play at the pro level but is a work in progress in terms of developing his game to compete at the next level. Wey was much-improved after spending a year at Boston College despite missing time to nagging injuries and did well at the USA evaluation camp. Wey is still fairly early in the development process and should benefit from the extra time to train and hone his skills while developing his tactical game at the college level.

Potential- Top 4 2 way defensemen.

13. Zach Miskovic(D)- Signed as a free agent in 2009.(2003 draft eligible)

Talent Analysis- Miskovic is a sound, two-way defensemen who can contribute to the offensive attack. He is not a physically imposing player but plays a solid game in his own zone and is usually in good position. He plays a safe game and relies on smart, quick passes. He has an accurate shot that is especially effective on the power play.

Potential- Bottom pairing with 2nd PP duties.

14. Patrick McNeil(D)- 4th round selection(118th overall) in 2005.

Talent Analysis- McNeill is an offense-first defenseman in an organization that likes to feature the backline in the attack. McNeill's mobility and puck movement skills are the strength of his game He does not play a particularly physical type of game but relies on positioning to prevent scoring opportunities. McNeill has a good shot and was one of the top power play quarterbacks in the junior ranks. He is very elusive and has terrific one-on-one ability. McNeill, despite his offensive ability, is sometimes a liability in his own end. He at times takes obstruction penalties after being beaten by opposition forwards due to improper positioning. He has improved in making the transition from attack to defense, but this is still a developing area of his game.

Potential- Bottom pairing, PP specialist.

15. Phil DeSimone(C)- 3rd round selection(84th overall) in 2007.

Talent Analysis- DeSimone is a speedy forward who has the skills to impress and leadership abilities both on and off the ice. His two-way play is a work in progress but he has begun to correct some of his shortcomings when it comes to positioning and defensive awareness. DeSimone sees the ice well and is more of a playmaker than a true sniper. He is patient with with the puck and has good hockey sense when it comes to creating scoring chances.

Potential- 3rd line playmaker.

Other players:

Brandon Anderson(G), Trevor Bruess(C), Greg Burke(LW), Samuel Carrier(D), Viktor Dovgan(D), Dan Dunn(G), Joe Finley(D), Brett Flemming(D), Andrew Glass(LW), Josh Godfrey(D), Caleb Hebert(C), Nick Larson(C), Garrett Mitchell(RW), Dustin Stevenson(D), Mikhail Yunkov(C), Keith Aucoin(F), Joel Broda(F), Jake Hauswirth(F), Igor Ignatushkin(F), Jakub Klepis(F), Ivan Nepriayev(F), Maxim Orlov(F), Steven Pinizotto(F), Kyle Wilson(F), Sean Collins(D), Igor Shadilov(D), Artem Ternvasky(D), Sergei Zimakov(D), Dany Sabourin(G)

PROSPECTS:
Jakub Kindl, D, 23

Top Wing's prospect Kindl has, predictably, split time between Detroit and Grand Rapids this season. Spending some of his time with Detroit as a healthy scratch, he has nonetheless appeared in over a dozen games, but has yet to record a point. Recently returned to Detroit from a conditioning stint with Grand Rapids over the holidays, Kindl has performed well when he has suited up for the Griffins this year, moving the puck with confidence, and continuing to solidify his defensive game. While there is no indication of any great leap forward, Kindl's play has improved, though he still has a tendency to turn the puck over at inopportune times. This season will likely be a trying time for Kindl, one in which he will have to stay positive and wait for his opportunities to play. After a few seasons as the top defensive prospect for the Red Wings, Kindl now has some better competition pushing him, and hopefully this will inspire him to elevate his game.

Brendan Smith, D, 21

In Kindl's absence from Grand Rapids, Brendan Smith has become the Griffin's top offensive blueliner. With 22 points through the first 36 games, Smith is amongst the top ten AHL scorers amongst both rookies and defensemen. While the offensive production has been strong, Smith has also managed to keep his plus/minus up, and that may actually be a better sign of his development. While he still has much to work on in the defensive zone, Smith's size and skating ability are NHL-ready. Whether Smith's strong play extends into the second half of the season, where many former collegians tend to "hit the wall", will show whether he needs to upgrade his conditioning in preparation for next season.

Tomas Tatar, C, 20

Tatar had a slow start to the season, but since he erupted for seven points in a late November win over the Chicago Wolves, he has enjoyed a bit more consistency, and currently leads the Griffins in scoring. While his speed and fearlessness are exemplary, Tatar still needs to improve his upper-body strength if he hopes to be an NHL regular. Having just turned 20, Tatar should physically mature a bit more, and will look to make an impact at next year's training camp. Currently, Tatar leads the Griffins in points with 29 through 35 games. He was recently called up to the NHL where he has so far posted one goal in three game

Gustav Nyquist
Is poised for a very strong junior year at the University of Maine. Has the tools to be a playmaker with strong two-way ability as well. An all-around safe player.

Jan Mursak, RW, 22

The fastest skater amongst the Wings' stable of young thoroughbreds, Mursak was recently rewarded with his first NHL appearance. Though he saw little ice time, Mursak's speed was noticeable, and he acquitted himself well. While down at the farm, Mursak has performed at about the same level as last season, where he was much improved. Still in need of some muscle mass, Mursak does show a willingness to go to the greasy areas of the ice, and increased strength will only make him more effective in that regard. While it is unclear how long Mursak will spend with the Wings through the recent injury bug, any NHL ice time will give a better read on his potential at the top level.

Thomas McCollum, G, 21

With veteran Joey MacDonald backstopping Grand Rapids, McCollum was recently demoted to the ECHL's Toledo Walleye in order to receive more playing time. While a step backwards, McCollum has performed very well with the Walleye thus far, hopefully indicating that McCollum realizes that he needs to recommit himself to improving. Since he had not won a game since mid-November, the Griffins decided that McCollum's confidence was shot, and sent him down to straighten out his game. With Daniel Larsson's departure for Sweden, the road is open for McCollum to seize the reins as the Wings unquestioned number three goalie. If MacDonald remains in net for the Griffins all season, McCollum could conceivably spend the rest of the season in Toledo. With the Griffins, McCollum posted a 5-10-2 record, a 3.11 goals against average, and a .884 save percentage. With Toledo, he has a 3-0 record, a 2.10 goals against average and a .928 save percentage.

Riley Sheahan
Sheahan has all the skills necessary to be a power forward type player. He possesses excellent shooting and playmaking ability. His large frame allows him to hold onto the puck for extended periods of time. Is an all-around excellent prospect, showing himself to be more than capable of playing defensive hockey as well.
Projects as a first or second line power forward. Has the ability and size to play any role, which makes him a very likely candidate to play in the NHL one day. Sheahan will spend his sophomore year as a member of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
