Here's the setup:

Cable box is connected to tv with HDMI cable.

Can I also connect the cable box to a vcr/dvd recorder with rca cables and then connect the vcr to the tv with rca cables?

I would just change the source input on the tv if I wanted to record a show. I understand that the show would record in standard definition.

Is this doable?

In theory it could work, but I get the feeling that a lot of cable boxes wouldn't allow it to work. Might just be easier to buy /rent a PVR through your cable company.

Pretty sure you need a digital recorder box that can bypass the copy protection in the digital signal. I had a Hauppauge one with component video and stereo audio before, it worked well.

The dvd recorder already works with a digital cable box (standard def) and plain old rca cables. I was just wondering if it will work with a hi def cable box. The recorder is able to upconvert to hi def but the signal from the cable box is now standard def. Would a hi def cable box have its signal upconverted if it is hooked through this recorder?
