The problem isn't that, it's that gambling doesn't like me!!I don't understand the hate for casinos, you guys don't like gambling?
Was the Lighthouse Project going to be privately funded as well?
Wang proposed affordable housing, medical center, a beautiful lighthouse development and the county and town went up in rage saying it will bring in the wrong element. Sure, let's build a casino, honestly, it's what the town of Hempstead deserves. I doubt this ever happens anyway but it's just another reason why I chose to never buy a home in Nassau County.
Yes. And if the Town's concerns included "traffic," I'd love to see how they rationalize how much more there would be with a "24/7 tourist destination."
All of that time to try to come up with something more decent and it's a casino. Not to mention the clown show revolving door of leaseholders thinking they will be well positioned to get a piece of redevelopment pie for projects that may never happen.
At that time I agreed with your statement. Looking now at the way teams are being given huge acreage to build entire villages with venues and surround them with entertainment, retail, high rise condos, in retrospect Wang’s Lighthouse was ahead of it’s time. Back then it did need to be scaled back.
That old devil gambling. SINNERSI don't understand the hate for casinos, you guys don't like gambling?

So the visionaries of the great Long Island now have a soon to be casino. LI is stuck in the 80s…The idiotic lighthouse project was completely infeasible on so many levels.
He bought the Isles as a legacy changer, he continually did that the remainder of his life in various other projects/donations.In many ways I always felt sort of bad for Wang. There is no way he would have went through with buying a hockey team if he did not have a belief from Bettman and Nassau that this project was going to work.
I've honestly got no issue with casinos and gambling to be quite honest. It is funny looking back that they could have had a state of the art arena and genuine mini city with the Lighthouse Project.
Got a work from home PD day tomorrow so maybe it is the drinks hitting me but man... Wang may have had too big of ambitions but he cared more about the area (and his pockets) than elected politicians did at the time.
Oh, the Isles are very much better off where they ended up. The franchise would still be cap floor team even with a new building in Nassau. This is more about the use of that parcel of land.Based on that video it looks like the plan was to keep the NVMC and spruce it up and build around it. Yikes. I think they're better off where they ended up.
I agree with the new arena vs rebuild the Coliseum a la ClimatePledge Arena.Based on that video it looks like the plan was to keep the NVMC and spruce it up and build around it. Yikes. I think they're better off where they ended up.
Agreed. Without the LIRR station and spur they never would have gone to Belmont. And that was the main drawback for a mega-development at the Coliseum and Mitchell Field.Oh, the Isles are very much better off where they ended up. The franchise would still be cap floor team even with a new building in Nassau. This is more about the use of that parcel of land.
Developments like the LH are built all over the west coast and the world. It was too big for the small minded brains. LI is much closer to being a ‘burb in outer MI versus a ‘burb of one of the most influential, diverse, and attractive cities in the world.
There you go…point made.NYC is an overgrown shithole
Statistics would disagree with this assessment:I pass by a casino every day on my way to work and I don't think it negatively impacts the area. If anything, it's been a positive. Casinos, nice ones, keep riff raff out and don't let them hang about. I would assume anyone paying the price to develop that area would want a nice casino.

If Nassau County residents try to hold onto that “charm” as it’s main thrust…to be an “anti-city” without giving people a reason to stay there, play there, invest there, it will continue to lose it’s tax base. And this is just the opinion of someone who moved out of Long Island but I do think part of the charm of living there is it is NOT the city. That being said I don't think making that area a destination would have made it anything like a city....
It was a labeled a ‘city’ by those that opposed it bc they knew if you mentioned ‘city’ the LIers would freak out about a ‘NYC’ in the middle of the great Nassau. And this is just the opinion of someone who moved out of Long Island but I do think part of the charm of living there is it is NOT the city. Key thing here is it would have been privately funded which is unheard of nowadays. Wang was willing to put his money where his mouth was.
Statistics would disagree with this assessment:
The Town of Hempstead, Village of Garden City, Nassau County Republicans fought every other development of that site tooth and nail. I hope they get the casino, I hope it’s open 24/7/365, and I hope every degenerate who goes there takes a side trip straight down Stewart Avenue and throws cigarette butts out their window as they pass those $2M homes.
pick me up at 8??throw in a couple of hookers and some check cashing stores, it will be perfect.

It was a planned (something LI has zero idea how to do or desire to) mixed use development - privately funded like you said. Something that is very successful in many other areas of the country and world.
Wang wanted to make a nice little city on the site complete with more housing . i see that moo cow Murray every time there is a parade or event in the neighborhood and every time she is near me I yell out “ LETS GO ISLANDERS “ .
As someone in construction I hope they build it then tear it down then build something else and so on . LGI
