hysteria-man i remember the guys hated that album but the girls back then were all over that shit. pyromania and hi and dry were cool.

ratt: out of the cellar, invasion of your privacy, dancing undercover and detonator - i'll take over any of these albums over crue and def leppard that's not hi and dry, pyromania, too fast for love, shout at the devil and maybe new tattoo. and warren demartini destroys all their guitar players pre john5.

Rating bands by guitar prowess is a pandora's box we really don't want to open. Heh. (Example: Reb Beach is one of the great 80's shredders... so, yeah, lets not go there...)

John5 > DeMartini I will buy, because DeMartini is limited and a bit of a one trick pony Van Halen clone. It's cool what he does, but it isn't dynamic.

However, I will counter that Phil Collen >= John5. Collen continues to evolve as a player and can play anything, any style. I am not a big fan of his era of Def Lepard, but I will say the guy is a great guitar player who never stops getting better.

I would put Clark/Willis on my top 5 guitar duo list along with... (in no particular order)
Downning/Tipton
Murray/Smith
Gorham/Robertson
M. Young/ A. Young

These days, I really don't want to be in a room when any of Joe Elliot, Vince Neil, or Stephen Percy sing...

Edit.

The reason Def Lepard has sold more albums overall than Ratt and Motley Crue put together is because of .... Rick Savage. Rick Savage is the Michael Anthony of Def Leppard. Crue and Ratt do not have one of these.

don't tell me where or where not to go. somebody brought up demartini's name so yeah i'll continue onward.

john5 is not better than demartini. demartini's guitar solos are actually more cooler sounding than eddie van halen's. he also helped george lynch to figure out how to play randy rhoads' stuff to prepare for the ozzy audition.

phill collen is good but he isn't even the best guitarist in def leppard.

i don't think i've ever heard malcom young play lead. so i would replace that with something like paul gilbert/bruce bouillet or even demartini/crosby.

robertson? over gary moore or even sykes? ok. you're entitled to your opinions.

Elliott is OK live at his age. The band does some heavy lifting no doubt but I wouldn't compare him to Neil or Percy.

Rick Savage? Yeesh fairly invisible bassist who has some good backup vocals but I think I would put Mutt Lange's contribution a little higher.

crue, ratt, def leppard: the key number is 4. they each put out 4 decent albums. out of those 12 albums total shout at the devil is arguably the best out of all them. i would even consider to be one of the best albums of the 80's. the songs rock, and the sound - it was real unique at that time. my friend who played guitar tried to get that sound on his rig for 2-3 years before finally giving up.
One band is not like the other

I don't remember who said it, but one of the best pieces of music-industry advice I ever heard was to pay attention to what strippers are picking for their dances. Whatever new song they're dancing to now will be all over the radio in 6 weeks.

The more you think about it, the more you realize that virtually every music trend is based around what makes a girl feel sexy to dance to. And that probably crosses over to TikTok in a modern context.

there are lots of merits to the stripper theory. it seems like everytime i hear a song at the stripclub i've never heard before before you know it that song is being everywhere. the mall, where you eat, tv, etc. just no escape.

ahh dude if the girls back then that i saw wearing those def leppard t-shirts were in a mind altering time capsule and warped to the present day to become strippers i would become broke.
