The record holder for most wins in a season, in all 4 major sports, did not win their championship.

1995-96 Detroit Red Wings / 2018-19 Tampa Bay Lightning
2015-16 Golden State Warriors
2001 Seattle Mariners / 1906 Chicago Cubs
2007 New England Patriots

As a Wings fan, I was already painfully aware of this. But is it really a shock to most people?

Being consistently good in the grind of an 82 game season does not mean you'll be great at beating the same opponent 4 times in 7 games. Especially when all the penalty rules effectively change.

Playoffs are a different animal. You lose to Tb in the regular season you can make up the points lost against another opponent.

In the playoffs if you want to advance you have to beat Tb. So the players have to execute the game plan of the coaching staff. Everyone has to buy in to get it done. And players have to win one on one battles for the puck.

Guaranteed.

Not even. The team with the most wins is not guaranteed to be the team with the most points and thus the President's Trophy.

Hell, we don't even have to look back any further than last season to see this demonstrated. In 2017-18, Tampa finished with 54 wins and 113 points. Nashville's 53 wins and 117 points claimed the President's Trophy without having the greatest number of wins.

Ottawa would have won the Stanley Cup if they had been given an extra wild-card.

It’s almost as if the game is played on the ice and not on paper... what a concept!

Ovetime loss point (STUPID) sneaks up on everyone. Jackets were only the 8 seed because of a low number of overtime losses. People just assume they were the worst team in the post season this year because of their seed and history. They had more wins than NINE teams in these playoffs.

Will they ever shelve the presidents trophy?

First place overall teams oddly lost fewer 1st round series in the years before that trophy was introduced

NBA is certainly different though in terms of winning a lot of games in regular season:

73: Warriors lost in 7 Games NBA Finals
72: Bulls won
69: Lakers and Bulls won
68: 76ers won, Celtics lost in Conf Final in 7 Games
67: Out of 7 teams, 5 won, 1 lost to the team with the most wins (2016 Spurs to 2016 Warriors), the 07 Mavs lost in 6 Games in 1st Round

So out of the 13 winning-est teams in NBA regular season, 9 won, 1 of the 4 that didn't faced the #1 team so both of them couldn't win that year, 1 lost in 7 games in the final.
