If we're adjusting for NHL-specific inflation, Gretzky's fights with Dave Taylor and Neal Broten (both above average 1st line players) would have to qualify. And then there's Wayne's fight with Phil Sykes, who wasn't a star, but Jari Kurri was the third man in.

I don't have the number handy, but you'd have to think Kurri, Taylor and Broten would have been among the most expensive hockey players in the world in the mid 80s, to say nothing of Gretz.

Staal at 9.25, Phaneuf at 8.0, grand total of $17.25 million bucks in salary and $15.25 million in cap hit. Not gonna find many that are more expensive than that.
