Relatively young team, even by AHL standards.

Some bizarre scheduling I’ve been reading about re the AHL. Suggesting they are creating 3 team bubbles for 3 games, meaning teams play their 2 opponents 15 times each. What I don’t understand is why they don’t just travel with the NHL teams and play the farm teams of the NHL opponents, ie while Edmonton is in Winnipeg for 2 games their AHLers play ours for 2 games as well. There’s no utility to having teams play in AHL markets with no fans.

That was my idea. Have the AHL team play in the afternoon and the big team in the evening.

Think Europe will have a lot better hockey for development than the AHL this year...

Divisional games only. So Bridgeport plays Providence and Hartford 12 times each starting next week and ending first week of May. No schedule out for the Canadian division yet.

The only thing I can think of is it may be easier to isolate players, and avoid covid by having smaller groups. Having 50 people + staff, travelling at the same time, may be a logistical issue.

I wonder if they will win a game this year. That lineup is a who's who of... Who?

The whole AHL is like that with taxi squads being a factor this year. There's a few good young defensemen playing in the A this year, in the Canadian Division, like Brannstrom, Lillegren and Guhle, and Cayden Primeau should be the best goalie. Cole Perfetti will be measured in his performance against Nic Petan quite often, or Logan Brown/Logan Shaw, or Cameron Hillis, but the talent level of forwards is quite a bit thinner in general.

At least this should add some more variety to the season.

Also this:

Good for the Moose, saving some travel. Good for the Flames, keeping their players closer to home.

Wonder if the Oilers will follow suit, if California is a no go for the AHL.

Don't say anything at all
At some point the Moose should build a more intimate arena (about 7-8K seats) in the suburbs of Winnipeg, so Bell MTS Place can host more non-hockey events. Its event schedule options are limited now because of having to host both the Jets and Moose. I don't think NHL teams and their AHL affiliates sharing a home arena in general is a good idea outside of situations like a pandemic, because it limits the amount of other events those arenas can host during hockey season.

It's more likely True North would build a 4000 seat arena so that demand would exceed supply and they could keep ticket prices high. :sarcasm:

Is the long-term solution still to keep the Moose in town? Honestly, I’m a bit surprised they’ve lasted this long, but I guess having the affiliated team in town is super helpful to the Jets.

I think part of the appeal of having the Moose in town for the Jets is that they can share the same facility. I don't think having the Moose playing 40 home games a year really takes that much out of a concert business that was seeing maybe a half dozen concerts or other big events (figure skating, wrestling, what have you) a month on average.

And as to how long term the arrangement will be, well... several NHL teams with their AHL team in the same city have been holding on to this arrangement for quite some time now, so there is no reason to believe it won't continue for the long haul. Maybe some day another city will lure them away with a new arena and big promises, but I doubt that will happen anytime soon considering the circumstances.
