Value of: Montreal Offer-Sheeting Marner or Matthews

How would this process work?

Could Montreal offer Matthews 14x7 and Marner 12x7, and take whomever the Leafs can't match (because they can't match both)

Is there a rule saying you can't do it that way? Is there a way for the Leafs to dodge that?

I feel like Montreal >HAS< to offer-sheet Matthews specifically; Weber and Price are signed long term and this team needs to be winning now.

I don't think you could submit an offer sheet that uses the same picks because in theory what if the Leafs let both go to you guys? It would invalidate one of the deals by default.

Players need to sign the offer sheet.

If one player signed then the offer to the other player would need to be rescinded because the required picks wouldn't be available.

I figured that was the case; but could that not let Toronto sit on the offer sheet for a week while they work out a deal or a trade for the other player, then match the offer to effectively block the team from offering the other player?

Seems like a weird system either way.

You should try to trade Weber for someone like subban

pls stop, it still hurts.

Islanders would be the obvious team to do it if any right?

Islanders are incredibly young, and have way too many holes in their roster to fill. Why not just do a short retooling? I could see them going after Marner to play with Barzal I suppose, but losing four first round picks could be risky.

Leafs will be giving these kids what they want.........there will be no need for offer sheets, it's the rest of the gang that could be available.

Kadri Gardiner etc

Theoretically, sure.
I highly doubt they'd want to play in Montreal, so I doubt they'd sign it.

Offer sheets don't exist.

Next.

The contract on our #1 defenseman says otherwise.

It's very likely nobody offer sheets either player; but it would be stupid that no team considers it. Every team should consider it, to be honest. Matthews is just flat out worth four firsts, even if they're all lottery picks.

Matthews at 12.5
Marner at 10

You guys absolutely need defense moving forward; would be risky to put all your eggs in the Matthews/Marner/Nylander/Tavares basket.

Why not? Move from one S-tier hockey market to another. Get paid significantly more (12.5 - 14 over 7 years = an extra 10m) and play for a team that has the ability to compete with a few changes.

I think the Leafs match any offer sheet that presented. That doesn't mean it won't happen and if it does it would put Toronto in a tough cap situation. I'm sure Dubas will want them both signed before July 1st but if for some reason he doesn't it could get messy

They could offer sheet one, then when Toronto match, offer sheet the other one, but they cant do both at the same time because the compensatory picks are the same.

Bergevin is probably one of the last GMs that would do this.

He should be the first to try it, though.

Imagine a world the Habs draft top 6, add a winger, trade Suzuki or Poehling + for a top 4 LD, sign Gardiner as a free agent and offer sheet Matthews.

The team would be solid top to bottom, and would contend for a cup easily.

why in the hell would Montreal give a tons of first round picks for Marner ? you would give 4 years of high picks for Marner ?
The cost to sign a RFA is simply stupid and no GM wants to touch that.

$9,131,645 or greaterFour first-round picks

ITS INSANE, you do understand that MTL top draft picks are going to be in the top 10 for 2 +years, right ?

you would give Toronto a dynasty for Marner, really ?

Why concentrate on the Leafs, there are MANY, many high end RFAs available?
