FWIW, Dundon is in the middle of a dispute for $70m with the AAF. Obviously, he should be concerned with the OS and I still expect him to give the go ahead to Waddell to match but pretty sure this wasn’t the news he wanted to hear today. He’s probably giving Waddell an earful right now.

I mean him and his ownership group lost almost $4m last season, plus he may or may not get all or some of his $70m from the AAF. Now, he has to dish out a bunch of money to pay Aho’s signing bonus knowing Aho may walk for nothing in 5 years?

Looking at Carey Price's contract 10.5M/year, he got paid 26 M in bonuses the first calendar year.
Aho will be paid 21.17 M in bonuses in his first calendar year.

If carolina matches aho's 8.5M contract, then I don't see why they wouldn't match the 10.5 M contract considering it would probably just be 4.83 M more in bonuses the first year

They can on the max bracket because the caveat is to have 4 out of the next 5 1st pick available, which the Habs still have regardless of their Aho offer. They also have cap space with the cap cushion. They could offer Marner 12 per if they wanted, they'd just be kinda stuck if Carolina ends up not matching.
