Should've just bought the Loyal's trademarks or bring back the Toros or whatever. Much better than this generic crap.

Its their way of legitimizing the league.

European fans will never taker the MLS seriously, but you have a better chance with names like Inter Miami FC than Miami Fusion.

Eh, they respect good teams. Do Europeans care that NBA teams have specific names as opposed to being something something BC or Basket or the like? Not at all, European basketball fans just want to watch good basketball.

MLS is maybe the 10th best league in the world in soccer. Europeans don't respect it because they view it as a nursing home for past their prime stars that are getting one last payday and for randos that can't crack their elite leagues.

If the MLS were a premier league, fans over there wouldn't care that our teams were called the Chicago Fire or San Jose Earthquakes.

Thats different. In basketball you have the opposite - the Euro teams are much worse than the NA teams and aren't nearly as popular.

That's the point though, quality is all that they care about, and for good reason. If the MLS turns into a top tier league on par with the Premier League or La Liga, the only complaint Europeans will have with the league would be with the time difference and that it's MLS rather than MLF.

Ahem it's Inter Miami CF actually, as in Club de Futbol.

I don't think MLS teams using European style names like "_____ FC" is to appeal to EUROPE, it's to appeal to fans HERE who are the soccer snobs.

As someone who's spent a lot of time in soccer bars, there's definitely a sizeable population of hipster soccer fans; and the biggest challenge for MLS has been trying to get THEM, not the Joe Average Sports Fan who roots for his city's teams.

Not entirely true. There may be some partial truth, but let’s put it this way:

The fear is that the US will find the money to have our clubs beat them mercilessly, to buy off all the good players, and use the current structure of this league to never be accountable to anyone. The laugh is that MLS is still more concerned with money than quality… the assessed value of MLS clubs are shockingly high for the quality. Pro-rel would indicate that there would be a compromise on the structure, so I think they’re partly right. But pro-rel in itself does nothing if management doesn’t learn to do better developing domestic talent… AND get potential fans AND owners to care on a larger scale.

And note what I did there. The big assumption is that going pro-rel would force clubs to better develop talent, and that would make MLS competitive in the world. Yet how often do, oh, French clubs do at retaining players? The national team can win a World Cup, but has that really done Ligue Un any favors? There’s more to the equation than just pro-rel.

The club value has nothing to do with on field quality for MLS. The attendance and league revenue are the primary drivers. They are already among the top 10 in the world in both categories. The potential of the league and the growth over the last 10 years has driven up values.
