MLD #9 Drafting Thread

[Transplanted Caper]

Welcome to the Minor League Draft #9. The draft will last 16 rounds, with each team drafting 24 roster spots. Starting in Round 9, GM's will draft 2 players at a time. Each team MUST draft 12 forwards, 6 defensemen, 2 goalies and a head coach and 3 extras of the GM's choosing. Any player who was not drafted in ATD#9 is available to be picked.

Trades can be made however the following rules apply, you must trade EQUAL assets (i.e. a pick for a pick, a player for a player, a pick for a player etc, no 2 for 1 or 3 for 2 deals as roster sizes must all be equal). Also, your window to trade elapses as soon as you're on the clock to make a selection (i.e you can't wait around for a deal to come while you're on the clock).

The clock will be fast, four hours per selection, so if you're unlikely to be around for an extended period of time, please send a list to someone else who can make your selection for you. Please also make sure you send a PM to the next GM after you have made your selection.

The clock will officially begin ticking at noon tomorrow, but picks can be made before then. PM's have been sent to all the GMs. The Bergen Flyers won the draft lottery and will pick first.

Bergen selects D Viktor Kuzkin.

Kuzkin is an elite level (for the MLD draft at least) offensive defenseman who was extremely capable of leading the rush and QBing the PP. According to the IIHF, "Kuzkin proved to be a major threat at both ends of the ice – playing stellar defense in his own zone and then turning up ice to attack, scoring an impressive 70 goals in 530 career games with his club team." He was also respected for his leadership and was selected as the Soviet team captain during the '72 Summit Series.

According to Tarasov: "Viktor never lost his cool in tough situation and had a knack for rallying the team. It's no coincidence that he captained the Army and national squads for so many years. An exemplary sportsman, and very courageous on the ice, Kuzkin was generous and unassuming in everyday life.".

Thanks, it was tough to pass up Kuzkin as my 7th defenseman in ATD9 based on his skill but felt he wasn't a good fit with the defensive group I already had, so to still have him around now was fairly surprising.

Plus the pick was on the clock anyway. Why not just ask to be skipped camper and make your pick whenever you're ready?

Yeah, I thought about that too. But that doesn't change that there is no reason for someone to make this trade. There has to be something in it for him. If the trade is reworked right away we can still accept it as an exception but if not camperjr should make his pick or ask to be skipped.

It's a GBC first - the first time I have ever picked a goalie with my first selection. The Humboldt Indians are pleased to select a former NHL wins leader, a two-time Vezina finalist, a second-team all-star in 1992, the Canucks true MVP in the 1994 Cup run, and the man responsible for the Save of the Century:

Worth noting is that McLean was also our No. 1 goalie in our first MLD.

Regarding the Bailey pick... he's not that bad a player, but I just want to confirm camperjr is sure of who he's picking.

Do you mean to pick the Ace Bailey who played 578 NHL games, became a scout, and was on the hijacked 9/11 flight?

Peteborough selects LW Herb Cain

Born a year later than the records usually show, Cain was a tremendous player during his lengthy and successful career. His first team was the local St. Johns Separate School team. In Cains only season, St. John's scored 56 goals Cain scored them all!

He was put on the negotiation list for the Canadiens, but they let the Maroons sign him in 1933. Coach T.P. Gorman formed the explosive Green Line (Cain, xxxx, and xxxx) and the English Montrealers won the Stanley Cup in the spring of 1935.

In 1939, Cain was sent to Boston for xxxx, and he became one of the most popular players in town. At the time, he became the 13th player to score 200 career goals and won the scoring championship with a then-record 82 points. In 1946, he began a career in the AHL, playing for Hershey and winning the Calder Cup. He later coached the Junior Smoke Rings in Ontario for five years, winning three provincial championships.
