MLD 2015
The draft is on! PM the next guy after you pick.

The draft will last 25 rounds. You must draft 2 goalies, 6 defensemen, 12 forwards and a coach, with 4 additional picks to be used for whatever position(s) you want.

12 hour clock for the first two rounds, (sending a shortlist to another GM highly encouraged here)
then 10 hour clock for rounds 3-6,
then 8 hour clock for rounds 7-14,
then 6 hour clock for rounds 15-20,
then 4 hour clock for rounds 21-25

Trading is allowed. Trades must be equal in numbers, 2 picks for 2 picks, 1 player and a pick for 2 picks, and so on. Really lopsided trades can be vetoed. Rounds 16/17 through 24/25 will be double picks per round.

The time limit is 12 hours for picks in the first round. If you miss a time window don't panic, just make up the pick ASAP. You can PM your preferred pick to someone beforehand and they can make the pick for you.

Suggestion: POST A REASON OR STATISTIC OR DESCRIPTION WITH YOUR PICK to aid discussion and let us know a bit about the pick, as many may not be household names, especially from other eras.

You must PM the next GM after your selection. And please post a notice to that effect on the draft thread to ensure a smooth flow to the draft.

Any player from any league or era are eligible as long as they were not at all drafted in the ATD 2013 (that means add/drop are ineligible too). As soon as a pick is posted, the next team's clock will begin even if an ineligible player is chosen: the pick will simply be made up as soon as possible.

Player selection should be based on what they have done (the 'next best' draft, so to speak, the greatest all-time careers not honored by being picked in the main ATD 2013 draft), and not what they will do in the future, though it's understood that there is a bit of historical hypothetical projection with players whose careers were cut short by injury.

Players could be traded if team needs change. At the end of the draft a team could pick up an undrafted UFA and simply discard a draft pick.

The number of teams that make the playoffs will depend on the number that qualify for the postseason. To qualify, a team must meet this all-time draft roster condition: Have on the team at least ONE player from each of the following all-time hockey periods:

1916 or earlier
1917-1942
1943-1965
1966-1979
1980-1994
1995-2004
in 2015 (ANY active/nonretired pro player with 300-plus games pro experience regardless of when he began his career)

The very first game ever played in a top pro league defines which time period for the required condition (so, an eighties player whose NHL or SEL rookie season started in 1979 would meet the 1966-79 time period requirement).

On another front, there will be an all-star team of 1LW, 1RW, 1C, 2D, 1G, and 1Coach voted on after the regular season.

VanIslander has been skipped since it's been 12 hours.

I'll select Alexander Almetov, C

A September to Remember said:
Almetov, like most Russians, was a well trained forward when it came to skating, puckhandling and passing, though he was never an elite scoring threat. Part of that was because Almetov was a superior defensive forward. In fact he was a mainstay on the Russian penalty killing units perhaps the best PK man they ever had.

I'll take a guy who i think deserves a big bump.

Jamie Benn LW

426 games, so he's been around long enough now i think. His production has increased each of the past 2 years and the needle certainly seems to be pointing up. You won't find guys with multiple NHL postseason AS nods, or Art Ross winners left at this stage.

359 points
Art Ross (2014-15)
1st Team AS (2013-14)
2nd Team AS (2014-15)
NHL Captain since 2013
WJC Gold (2009)
Olympic Gold (2014)

Playoff MVP (WHA) (1976)[1]
WHA Second All-Star Team (1977)[1]
Avco Cup (WHA Championship) (1976 and 1978)[1]
WHA all-time leader in career assists per game (1.15)[1]

Wow. He went from AAA to the 4th player taken in the MLD.

If guys like Doughty and PK Subban can get taken in the middle/late rounds of the ATD i think Benn is an MLD player and a good one at that, after his last 2 seasons.

You aren't going to find many NHL captains who've won major hardware and been on multiple postseason teams at a tough position to fill, LW.

I have no idea who all else is available, but I'd imagine that Jamie Benn's worth here is determined largely by whether you think he has what it takes to be a power forward / puck winner here.

I don't see why he can't do that. In the ATD? He'd be over matched somewhere between a lot and a decent amount. Here? How many D and checking line F's are/were ever top 10 players at their respective positions?

Benn has arguably been the second best LW in hockey 2 straight years now. He's got enough service time and resume for me to believe he can be effective in multiple roles offensive against MLD level comp. He's a good leader dating all they way back to his Memorial Cup success. 6'2'' 210 lbs and from what i've seen personally and what scouting reports are out there, shouldn't have a problem playing any style of hockey, especially in the offensive zone.

2nd round already?????

This sucks. On Sunday I suggested a few ideas as well as a 24-hour clock for the first round, and the reply on the thread was a basic assent to the ideas.

Then I had a busy week and thought: If the clock starts Wednesday and is 24 hours long I will barely miss my clock even if I am to draft early.

Now, two days after the draft has started I discover I have missed the entire first round??? (Because of a 12-hour clock and lightning quick picks and high draft position all combined for the perfect storm of crapness).

I'd request my draft position to be either just before or after 70'slord's (whichever he'd prefer) but I suspect it'd be met with 'tough **** finger waving. Oh well.

My biggest nightmare has always been waiting, waiting, waiting, waiting for a draft to start, then it suddenly, with little forewarning goes all guns blazing at a fast clip. Arggh.

Pretty amazing how dominant he was down the stretch on a team that really had nothing to play for. Last 12 games, 12 goals, 13 assist, 25 points. He'll drop the gloves, go to the net, do anything you need.

I'll take another active guy who's had a pretty good career to this point. Good 2 way play with strong play making skills. Can help on the PK as well.

David Krejci C

409 points in 551 games.
He's led the playoffs in goals once, assists once, and scoring twice (77 points in 93 games overall) with a ring to show for his efforts.
Selke finishes of 6 and 12

FWIW, there is precedent to moving a GM who missed his 1st round pick to the end of the 1st round.

Seems kind of late now, as the 2nd round is like half over though...

I'll select Herb Jordan, C

Herb_Jordan,_Renfrew_Hockey_Club.png

Old Seventies Bio said:
- 5'6", 130 lbs
- top-3 in CAHL scoring three straight years (3rd-1903, 2nd-1904, 3rd-1905, twice to Russell Bowie, once to Frank McGee, one of these times he had a much better GPG. This was as an 18-20 year old versus a 22-24 year old Bowie!)
- 9th in ECAHA scoring (1906)
- 15 points in 5 ECAHA games (1907) - which was 3rd-highest PPG average after Bowie & Russell
- 4th in ECAHA scoring behind Bowie, Walsh, Phillips (1908 - again, 2nd in PPG)
- 2nd to Marty Walsh in ECHA scoring (1909)
- Was leading Renfrew with 9 goals in 6 games before being replaced by Lalonde (1910)
- 33rd in pre-merger goals according to The Trail Of the Stanley Cup
- Best vs1 scores (I use vs1 for all pre-merger players to account for lesser competition in half-leagues): 83, 75, 74, 66, 64, 58

Jordan was a star scorer everywhere he played, finishing top-4 in scoring five times! He was also 4th and 6th in other seasons. He missed 1-4 games a couple of times and actually placed 1st, 2nd, 2nd, 2nd, 3rd, 3rd, 4th, 6th in points per game in these 8 seasons.

Previously Jordan's playmaking was a question mark, as only goal stats were available. Thanks to solid SIHR research, the stats database has been beefed up with some sparse assist stats. It's still not much to go by, but Jordan was 1st in CAHL assists in 1903 with 4, 2nd in the ECAHA in 1908 with 5, and 3rd in the ECAHA in 1906 with 4. Jordan had 17 recorded assists to Russell Bowie's 22 during the 6 seasons they played in the same league together. This appears to be the 3rd-most over this period (one behind Alf Smith)

Seventies Bio

Hockey Historysis said:
Quebec's great centre from 1903 to 1909, Herb Jordan was one of the most gifted goal-scorers of his time. Largely forgotten today, Jordan actually has a strong case for the Hall of Fame, when you compare his performance to that of his contemporaries.

In 1903, Jordan was third in goal scored, behind two immortals in Russell Bowie and Frank McGee. In 1904, he was behind only Bowie in goals, but actually scored at a greater rate per game than Bowie did, which was no mean feat when comparing oneself to a player who averaged nearly three goals per game for his career. In 1905, Jordan was again third in goals (behind Bowie and Quebec teammate Joe Power), but second in goals per game. In 1908, he was fourth behind three Hall-of-Famers (Bowie again, Tommy Phillips and Marty Walsh), and in 1909 he was second behind only Walsh. He was never able to lead the league in scoring, but came very close several times.
