The draft is on! PM the next guy after you pick.

The draft will last 25 rounds. You must draft 2 goalies, 6 defensemen, 12 forwards and a coach, with 4 additional picks to be used for whatever position(s) you want.

Trading is allowed. Trades must be equal in numbers, 2 picks for 2 picks, 1 player and a pick for 2 picks, and so on. Really lopsided trades can be vetoed. Rounds 16/17 through 24/25 will be double picks per round.

The time limit is 12 hours for picks in the first round. If you miss a time window don't panic, just make up the pick ASAP. You can PM your preferred pick to someone beforehand and they can make the pick for you.

Suggestion: POST A REASON OR STATISTIC OR DESCRIPTION WITH YOUR PICK to aid discussion and let us know a bit about the pick, as many may not be household names, especially from other eras.

You must PM the next GM after your selection. And please post a notice to that effect on the draft thread to ensure a smooth flow to the draft.

Any player from any league or era are eligible as long as they were not at all drafted in the ATD 2013 (that means add/drop are ineligible too). As soon as a pick is posted, the next team's clock will begin even if an ineligible player is chosen: the pick will simply be made up as soon as possible.

Player selection should be based on what they have done (the 'next best' draft, so to speak, the greatest all-time careers not honored by being picked in the main ATD 2013 draft), and not what they will do in the future, though it's understood that there is a bit of historical hypothetical projection with players whose careers were cut short by injury.

Players could be traded if team needs change. At the end of the draft a team could pick up an undrafted UFA and simply discard a draft pick.

The number of teams that make the playoffs will depend on the number that qualify for the postseason. To qualify, a team must meet this all-time draft roster condition: Have on the team at least ONE player from each of the following all-time hockey periods:

1916 or earlier
1917-1942
1943-1965
1966-1979
1980-1994
1995-2004
in 2014 (ANY active/nonretired pro player with 300-plus games pro experience regardless of when he began his career)

The very first game ever played in a top pro league defines which time period for the required condition (so, an eighties player whose NHL or SEL rookie season started in 1979 would meet the 1966-79 time period requirement).

On another front, there will be an all-star team of 1LW, 1RW, 1C, 2D, 1G, and 1Coach voted on after the regular season.

Sorry for being a bit late with my pick. Was working all night and had no time to make it but here is comes.

With the first overall pick in the MLD, Tre Kronor is proud to select:

Sven Tumba, C

Ulf Jansson said:
Have you ever heard of Maurice Richard, the Rocket? The world's best player from the blue line to the net. Tumba is our swedish counterpart to him. Tumba is almost as rough.

The San Francisco Seals are pleased to select:

Alexander Almetov -- Centre

A September to Remember said:
Almetov, like most Russians, was a well trained forward when it came to skating, puckhandling and passing, though he was never an elite scoring threat. Part of that was because Almetov was a superior defensive forward. In fact he was a mainstay on the Russian penalty killing units perhaps the best PK man they ever had.

I knew there would be some pretty excellent players left compared to most MLDs, but I didn't think I would be able to pick up a legit post-consolidation HHOFer.

Regina Pats select Harry Oliver, RW.

...a legit post-consolidation HHOFer...
Sort of. His best four-year stretch was as a star of the Western league (when talent was divided between leagues) before he joined the NHL at age 28. Whether he would have been inducted based on his post-considation play alone is questionable. So, if you replace "legit" with "arguably" and make the case, then we agree.

What i mean is that he's a legit hall of famer and played the majority of his career in the post consolidation nhl. I agree that most of his best seasons were in the west (four of his best six)

The comment was more about how out of place he looked being available at a time when all post 1920 HHOFers are long gone and any HHOFers who remain are from the pre-nha days (couple exceptions to each).

Dennis Maruk is my selection if he is available. Checked and don't think I saw him, but I may have missed him.
Arggggh...... I just have been schooled by a newbie. Maruk has NEVER (capital 'N') fallen to the MLD and for good reason: multiple 50+ goal seasons, 314 NHL points over a 3-year stretch (and a 60-goal season) and 878 points in 888 games? Eight significant seasons, one great playoffs, a decent career by every basic metric.

Maruk vs. Tumba for best center of this draft! (And I haven't gotten to my HHOFer yet. And two other great centers have already been drafted. Gee, when isn't center ice so deep in talent?)

Maruk has never fallen to the MLD.... except for MLD4, MLD5, MLD6, MLD9, MLD10, MLD11, MLD12 and MLD2010, that is

He's very good offensively, and one of the best forwards here for sure. But the edge he has on many other available players (most of whom are not nearly as bad defensively) is slim, and not worth the superlatives you're spouting. Once a lot more of them are selected it will be easier to demonstrate this. His best 6 vs2 scores total 440, which is not a number that is going to be impossible to beat in this draft.

My memories of the minor league drafts of 2010, 2009, 2007 and 2006 are shoddy, granted. I must be getting old.

I remember his card was pretty "cool" to win in throwing cards against the wall when I was in 6th grade in 1981. THAT much I remember.

If a point per game for nearly a thousand NHL games and a peak of 100+ points per season over more than a three-year stretch can be obtained in this draft I'll eat my words. Otherwise, the pick remains awesome in my books!

(Yeah, I know there are three multi-Stanley Cup champion leaders available. Plus two deserving Soviets and I'd bet most likely a couple of NHL stat monsters you'll dig up!).

we all get old...

nothing wrong with nearly a point per game over 888 games. But that's about the same as 0.85 points per game for a guy 15-20 years younger. When you look at it that way, his statistical dominance isn't unprecedented at this level.

His best season also figures heavily into that number (15% of his career points and 23% of his vs2 score) which demonstrates how unsustainable (fluky?) it also was. Plenty (PLENTY!) of players are still available with six 55%+ scoring seasons on their record and two 70%+ seasons, it's just that his best single season is usually much better than their best, but it also indicates that most of the time, these other players were at his level or better, just that when he was better, he was A LOT better.

Savard is a guy I'd have to say I'd prefer just a little more than Maruk. Better era-adjusted points producer, same deficiencies as a player, although Maruk is more goals oriented (goals are valued more than assists, but also goal scoring centers are harder to build around so I don't know whether that is an advantage or disadvantage for Maruk)
