2 vs. 4 in terms of the number of MLD 2010 all-stars but closer once honourable mentions are accounted for.

Tardif is an all-star and Gracie is an HM.

Coach Patrick is an HM.

Marks, Reay, and Keane are all-stars.
Macoun is an all-star and Gregg and Babych are HMs.

Well it's easier to get the all-star 3rd liners when you draft your third line while the rest of the teams are drafting their scoring lines. :p:

Texas has the best third line in the draft and Florida has one of the best first lines, if not the best. Look for this to be the key matchup of the series. Will Frank Patrick be able to get this line away from Texas' checkers? It could make a difference.

Both teams have excellent defenses.

To start off, best of luck to VanI. Hopefully you'll be able to get some comments in, and have your say on this series.

Home ice advantage really helps out there. Also, as VanI pointed out, Patrick is an HM coach, so looking at it just like that, it could be said that we have the coaching advantage.

I’m in the midst of moving, so some quick thoughts:

An interesting matchup given how the two teams seem to be built opposite of each other; Florida is designed to play a quick puck-moving game while Texas looks to grind it out on defence.

Offence: Both teams have gone from outside of the NHL for a significant portion of their offence, but overall, Florida’s is superior. Janney and Tardif are the best offensive players in the series and Texas lacks a player of their calibre. The second lines of the two teams are fairly even (a high scoring left-winger, playmaker/defensive centre, average offensively right-winger). Texas has the best bottom 6 scorer in Reay, and offensively is probably followed by Gracie, Lamb, and Marks. Both teams have offensive wild cards in Juneau and Moose Watson.

Defence: The defence for both teams are well-built for their game styles. Texas has a good collection of defensive defenders, but aside from Babych there isn’t a ton of offense. Florida makes up for any defensive deficiency to Texas by superior puck-moving and offensive potential as a group.

Goaltending: The other factor important for a defensive team is to have a goaltending edge and I don’t see Texas as having one. Ranford and Miller both were MVPs of best-on-best International tournaments and each has a major NHL award. Any edge for either team would be very slim at best.

To win, Florida will need to fight through the stifling defence of Texas, presumably generating as many shots as possible. To try to maintain the constant attack, the puck moving skills of Keith, Halderson, Wilson, and McNamara will be extremely valuable. The stars on Florida’s first line will need to stay away from the checking line of Texas. The ideal matchup for Florida is probably head to head with Texas’ first line, which could see Texa’s 1st line in their own zone or have the first line receive less ice time as Murray tries to line match against the Hammerheads in their own rink. Defence scoring could also be a big factor.

For Texas to win, they would need to use their defensive edge to close the offensive gap enough to survive on a counterattack offence. Without home ice, a dominant goaltender, or a dominant number 1 defencemen, it will be a challenge.

Doesn't sound like we'll see VanI before voting, but good luck to him and his team.

To clear up some things...

The Brahmas may have only one great offensive defenseman but it also has two other pretty good puck movers in Gut and Gregg. The Czechoslovakian team captain was an aggressive defender who played in all situations and surprise, surprise, that's exactly the sort of description made about Dr. Gregg. Coach Sather was renowned for actually using the third pairing a lot, unlike most teams. Gregg played both the pp and pk and was considered a significant contributor to the Oilers first ever Stanley Cup championship. Yeah, he isn't an ideal first pairing even at this level of competition, but given this team's offense is more about puck control than end to end rushes, that's a good thing. Look at the Brahmas top two lines and you see the ability to pass as a prime strength, and captain Farrell leads the way in orchestrating team play, as per his reputation. The idea is to have each line see significant minutes: the top two lines play a patient puck possession game while the bottom two lines play a more aggressive dump and chase, bang and recover style. When the Brahmas have a one goal lead they will frustrate with the offensive lines keeping the puck away from the opposition, eating time, but of course also with an incredible third line that will check and get scoring opportunities on transition, and by a blueline with Macoun, Gusarov (led NHL in pk minutes per game one season as a tandem with Foote) and two-time Stanley Cup champ Detroit captain Young (injured in the second cup but shouted from the bench, a real defensive leader, must have been as he scored squat). Coach Murray ran a defensively excellent Capitals franchise during the high scoring '80s. This is one of those teams that can win with a one goal lead. But can it come back when trailing? Yes. Khomutov, Keane, Reay and Juneau have each demonstrated clutch playoff heroics at the highest level of competition.

I expect this to be a close, physical series, Stan Jonathan will actually be valuable for Florida as Ruskowski and Peplinski will certainly rough things up and the bottom two lines of Texas will rock and roll. The Hammerheads have the size and strength on the blueline to handle getting banged around. It's really a battle of one team with a great first line and no real weakness versus a more defensively excellent, playoff savvy squad. An advantage to Texas is the fact that Florida has no real depth in scoring advantage as their second line is no better than the Brahmas' 2nd and is actually less impressive than the Texas third line in championship tourney play. If Texas shuts down the top line of Florida and handles the rushing blueliners then this series is over. At the same time, the Hammerheads is solid enough all around to be a deserving divisional champ, and this contest really could go either way.

Florida defeats Texas in 6 games. Three stars to be added later.

That's all I have time to do before running out. Feel free to start the finals thread, and have at 'er!

Thanks to VanI for the solid series. I know you were away with your move and such, so I'm sorry you weren't able to get more of a say in things, cause you had a awesome team. :handclap:
