Minnesota Wild prospect depth beginning to thin

I have to imagine Fletch and Flahr know they are pretty much set on the "safe" picks in drafting, guys with good work ethic, big body, committed, etc... Time to start reaching for game breakers or taking risks on offensive guys that fall.

Honestly, i'd be perfectly fine with 3-7 rounds of the typical Fletch & Flahr guy, so long as we are at the very least trying to grab some potential elite talent in the first couple rounds.

Yes, it is. Just look at the number of players taken after the 2nd round that play more than 100 games in the NHL. We're talking less than 10%. The fact that TB struck gold on a couple of players doesn't mean the exception is now the rule. Of course we've heard all about the late rounders that turn into stars (Zetterberg, Datsyuk, etc), but again, they are the exceptions.

Not necessarily - drafting is only part of the game, good development is the other. Minnesota has mediocre development outside their goaltending coach.

Can't say much about the other guys that were hired after Fletcher - though Cher...whatever his name is in Winnipeg looks like a disaster...but that's not saying much.

DR wouldn't have had the smarts or the cojones to make the deals that Fletcher did to bring in Coyle or Niederreiter. DR was very trade-averse (is that a word?)

Uh what?

Dwayne Roloson for a 1st and 3rd
Pavol Demitra for a 1st and Patrick O'Sullivan
4th round pick for Cliff Ronning
Manny Fernandez for Petr Kalus and a 4th round pick
Pascal Dupuis for Adam Hall
Willie Mitchell and a 2nd round pick for Shawn Belle and Martin Skoula
Zbynek Michael for Erik Westrum and Dustin Wood
Todd White for a 4th round pick
Marek Zidlick for Ryan Jones and a 2nd round pick

DR was not trade shy. In fact, he was constantly tinkering with the roster.

DR was shy of IMPACT trading. Pavol Demitra was the only impact player received in a trade. (You had it listed in reverse for some reason though)

Otherwise DR was trading away worthy assets for junk - ala Zbynek Michalek for Westrum and Wood... such a waste!

He's done okay but most of his picks outside the first round haven't really done anything. Zucker, Haula and Kuemper. Maybe Graovac and Olofsson but most of his other picks have been busts. We still haven't developed any elite goal scorer either, which our young core is missing.

I disagree with your premise because most picks outside the first round don't really do anything. That's just fact. Additionally, we can really only grade our management on 4 out of the 6 drafts they've been in charge of since only 21 players from the last two drafts have played an NHL game.

That said, Fletcher has drafted these players after the 1st round... Hackett/Kuemper/Haula/Bulmer/Larsson/Zucker and they've all played in the NHL.

And IMHO, these players who have shown they have the potential to play in the league, who have been drafted outside the 1st round... Gustafsson/Lucia/Graovac/Gilmour/Olofsson/Gabriel and Labbe.

Tough start for our team here in Iowa. Missed last weekends game, but went last night.
Ive been big on Graovac and Phillips in the past and nothing has changed over the summer. Graovac looked very good and is improving everyday I think, can step in for Brodziak anytime, Phillips looked 50% faster and after watching him in pre-season with Minnesota confirmed what Ive thought that he is close.
Clearly, they are our top 2 and based on how they were handled at camp and playing in pre season and length of time they were with big club, Fletcher and company agree.
Really liked the Schroder kid, very quick, being a 2009 drafted kid, I expected alot and wasnt disappointed.

IMO certain year's drafting as a whole should be first judged after 5 years and the final verdict can only be given after 7 years. Too early to look at anything after 2009.

No one is acknowledging that you draft defensemen and power forwards before talented offensive players, both of which take longer to develop. Skilled players come later, because they only take 2-4 years to get up and running.

Fletcher isn't building to add to the current group. It's already set. He has the vet core and the young core.

Fletcher is drafting for the the Wild team 5-7 years from now. Plenty of time to grab high-end forwards through the draft.

Drafting is dead simple. Just two things to remember:
- always draft the BPA
- BPA is about career

That's how the organisations go about it.

The hard part is to use the available information and make an educated guess who the BPA is within the bunch of eligible players still waiting to be drafted. Most of whom are growing teenagers.

Again last night, after first period, Schroder had two, Phillips had a beauty and Graovac had 2 assisits.

It's funny that people bring up Tyler Johnson from Tampa. We could have had him easily. He was at our developmental camp, he just played like crap. It's not our fault he isn't on our team, it's his. Sometimes things just work out funny.

I remember getting bashed over that trade because I thought it was dumb at the time and most Wild fans were for the trade.

Larsson and Hackett are no longer with the organization and Bulmer looks like a bust (he can't stay healthy or even really contribute). That's like saying Wanvig, Foy and Wallin contributed for the Wild.

And IMHO, these players who have shown they have the potential to play in the league, who have been drafted outside the 1st round... Gustafsson/Lucia/Graovac/Gilmour/Olofsson/Gabriel and Labbe.

Potential sure, but who knows. Right now we also (for the first time in a long time) have a log jam at defense, so I wouldn't be surprised if we traded a few of them.

You can't discount Larsson and Hackett, because they showed enough promise to land us Pominville, so those picks are STILL having a big positive impact!

Nope. If you have a surplus of blue chippers at one position, you leverage that to fill needs.

Drafting for need when there are better players available at other positions = dumb.

Perhaps in the later rounds, I will agree there. But never in rounds 1 and 2.

You gotta remember that DR was given the keys to a brand spanking new franchise. Some of his best trades were before the Wild even played a game.

DR did well for the first few years, but then he bungled up and got his ass fired. He got worse over time.

CF started slowly, made a howler with the Barker - Leddy deal, but has gotten better and better with time. That is the trend worth noting. He's been nothing short of stellar the last few years.

al lagoon, edm has been drafting BPA hows that been working out for them? if you need a goalie you draft a goalie or trade down maybe? why draft a forward when you desperately need a D man? hmmmm. you must draft bpa then hope to trade him???? crazy man.

Doing Nothing
Edmonton's drafting has not been good recently.

2009-11, Edmonton drafts Hall, RNH, and Nail. Nobody else has made the NHL and stuck.

Same time frame, Minny drafts Granlund, Larsson, Zucker, Brodin, Dumba. One of those guys is moved for a top line winger, one is a top line center, one is a top pairing D man, and there's a lot of prospects that can still pan out nicely.

Best Pick Available zealots ignore two fundamental assumptions of the BPA model that are not present in the NHL:

1) The trade market must be highly liquid. That means that team is able to trade any player at any time and still be able to receive full present value for that player. This means you can draft a player worth 97.5 units over a player worth 94.6 units, because you can cash out. The NHL, with the cap and contract limits, does NOT have a liquid trade market.

2) Player development timelines across positions are fairly equivalent. This means the present discounted value of a player of the same draft class are comparable. This is not present in the NHL, as power forwards and defensemen take about 2x as long to develop as offensive forwards and grinders.

BPA vs need is not black and white, either or. The good GMs consider both before selecting or trading up and down.

In other words, an NHL GM must draft and acquire players that peak around the same time. That means drafting goalies/defensemen/power forwards before drafting offensive forwards/energy players/grinders/tough forwards.

A team will be burned badly if a GM doesn't realize this. You'll be like the Oilers, where all of your skilled forwards will waste years on a team with no defense, power forwards, or goalies.

Notice the pivot the Islanders just did this offseason. They went out and grabbed Boychuk, Leddy, Halak, Kulyomin, plus Grabovski to add to the group that will be peaking.
