Kaprizov for Jack Hughes.

With its cap problems Minnesota is going to waste Kaprizov's 3 out of 4 contract years left, and then will he even agree to stay? Jack is younger and closer in his age to the team's future core, and he's a center.

On the contrary, New Jersey wants to make playoffs and maybe even more as soon as the next season, so a superstar like Kaprizov will be very helpful. Kirill has already showed he is able to carry his line and it's at the very least. He makes players around him better, so him being winger isn't big problem. Devils still have Nico Hischier, who can get to the next level playing along with Kaprizov. Or they can build another top line around Kirill and Mercer

new jersey declines.

the rebuilding devils are building their team around jack hughes. he is the most important building block and completely untouchable since he signed his 8 year extension.

Kaprizov is the better player though...
which is easily offset by age and contract. both are signed until the age of 29. hughes is just 1m cheaper and 4 years younger.

you could offer me any player in the nhl one for one (with maybe the exception of makar) for hughes and the answer is no. the devils have a roster designed to be successful in three to four years. remodelling the roster into a win now team would take multiple trades, which most likely won't be available without an overpay, and would mostly likely result in po disappointments against other great teams like tampa and colorado, who have taken the time to grow a perennial contender over multiple years.

the devils should target the time, when the window of those teams closes to contend, which most likely perfectly aligns with hughes' career arc.

Kaprizov is 25, signed for 4 more years @9M, and put up 1.33 ppg this year

Hughes is 21, signed for 7 more years @8M, and put up 1.14 ppg this year

Kaprizov is better right now, but Hughes is much younger and has a way better contract. I'd have to go with Hughes.
small correction 8 more years. his extension will kick in this summer.

else i completely agree.

And you're suggesting Jack Hughes can't do these things?

There are a lot of stars and superstars in the league who can't (especially in playoffs). Why do you think Hughes isn't one of them?
You're the one making the claim, you provide the evidence. Show the world how Jack Hughes didn't make the guys he played with better this season.

NJ would never entertain this.

They would get a slightly better player who is older, more expensive and signed for less years.

I'd expect Jack to be a better player within the next 4 years as well.

How does this trade address Minnesota's cap woes?

Good grief.
as much as this will never happen, its not meant to address the cap, its moving the contending window down a few years and allowing these 3 dead cap seasons to be learning seasons for the kids with no expectations.

If the Wild don’t like that deal, I understand. But as a Devils fan it doesn’t make sense for us as well.
